OK, am testing the DCOM, port 135 and it seems to be taking a while, is this normal?

If you download DCOMbobulator, and go to Am I Vulnerable tab and do the Local DCOM Test, it should be nearly instantaneous. The next tab DCOMbobulate Me! will let you disable DCOM.

People on USB modems and using XP will get a worm through this port if it's not closed, and the worm attacks are pretty persistent when you aren't behind a hardware firewall from a router. Even with a router it's still worth closing it if on XP.

Don't worry so much about the remote 135 test, as that'll be covered in the Shield'sUp! all service ports test (https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2).

It says I'm not vulnerable with SP2, do I still disable the thing?

May as well :) Doesn't matter in that case either way then.

thanks, just downloading Avast and a bit puzzled. the free version has a red cross next to banking/shopping and identity - surely it protects these? It gets good feedback on here.
