I use it to wash down paint work instead of sugar soap its a bit kinder to use.I usually buy it in Boots and a packet lasts for ages.I do put it in an old polythene box with a lid to keep it dry though as being a powder it can get quite damp if left in the packet.I think its really cheap and very useful around the house
You can also use soda crystals as an effective sugar soap. It'll do the job just as well and is cheaper - about 50p for a 1kg bag from the supermarket.
You can get borax from the Dri-Pak e-bay shop here: http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Dri-Pak-Ltd
If you do want to keep using Borax, I'd advise buying in bulk now, because it soon won't be available to the public.0 -
Sorry if this is posted here earlier, I had a quick flick through and couldn't see.
You can now buy both borax and bicarb of soda in Tesco in their eco cleaning area. They come in little green boxes for 99p (last time I checked).
I use borax for presoaking stuff before I wash it.
I have a really handy little book called Natural Stain Removers, by ANgela Martin. Its really good and offers advice on cleaning everything, and all sort of stains using natural products.0 -
I use borax to clean up anything really greasy, like the cooker or kitchen tiles. It makes this type of cleaning very easy.0

Why will Borax not be available to the public?
I've heard it is a poison and is considered carcinogenic - see here
I don't think I would use it in my house, tbh.Enjoying the power and freedom of letting things go.

Am I going mad, or do the first three links on that site go nowhere and the forth to a report which proves it is harmless in normal use?0 -

I used this to remove damp from bedroom walls. The chemist I went to refused to sell it to me though even though it was on the shelf for sale! God knows what he thought I was going to do with it...0

Apparently, if you feed 5 beagles a high dose of Borax every day, after 68 days one beagle will die and the others will show no signs of toxicity.0
