It's a white powder that you can use for cleaning, soaking clothes etc. It is pretty cheap - I'm sure I paid less than £1 for my packet.

    Hi lumpy,

There's a thread on borax that should answer all your questions so I've added your post to it to keep the replies together.

You'll find it harder to get hold of though next year because the EU has reclassified it, so it won't be readily available in hardware stores.
  • We mix it with icing sugar to get rid of ants.

I use it to wash down paint work instead of sugar soap its a bit kinder to use.I usually buy it in Boots and a packet lasts for ages.I do put it in an old polythene box with a lid to keep it dry though as being a powder it can get quite damp if left in the packet.I think its really cheap and very useful around the house

I put a tablespoonful of borax in the conditioner drawer of the washing machine when I have smelly towels that have been sitting in laundry baskets forever (teens' fault as always hehe).

It is a disinfectant and deodorant, as well as helping soften the water.
