Because the !!!!!! has truly hit the fan these last couple of days, and i'll be honest I dont like them, but we dont like to like everybody, that's allowed isnt it!?

I never said it wasn't, but I don't see a problem with being paid by cheque instead of SO. There's no difference tax wise.

Maybe he likes collecting the rent - as then he has an excuse to visit the property?

    My first thought too.

Or maybe he's not good at tracking online payments (or doesn't have an online bank account.)

Seems to me he's the one putting himself at risk here. I agreed once to a tenant paying me by posted monthly cheque and I'd never do it again - it's direct debit or bust now!

Yes and they arent going to do that unless someone brings it to their attention....

I think you are being a little paranoid, if he was asking for the rent in cash, then I might be concerned.

If you feel so inclined you can report the LL to the tax authority, see here> http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/tax-evasion/index.htm

Exactly! So why would a SO be any different to a cheque!? It wouldn't!

A standing order is instantly checkable - if no bank statements are available, then HMRC will assume the worst

Cheques can come from anywhere and go anywhere, HMRC will only bother with the bigger issues

And if you are wrong then prepare for the worst for your son.

To assume he is tax avoiding because he wants to be paid by cheque is just wrong imo.

Yep my Landlord used to like being paid monthly but because of previous tennants having lots of late payments, he now will only be paid termly so at least he has a bulk for mortgage payments etc. if just 1 person is late.

He's also quite old fashioned and when I do jobs for him he sends me a cheque - oh he must be tax avoiding as he's sending me a cheque oh noes!
