Landlord insists on rent paid by cheque....tax avoidance??

My Son's landlord insists he pays by cheque even though he has asked if he can pay by standing order. I just find it bizarre that anyone would choose to wait 5 days for the funds to clear.
Also should he have had receipts?
Thank you

    Receipts would be good.

There wouldn't be any tax avoidance if he were to pay by cheque or Standing Order, obviously the LL should be declaring everything but this could happen by cheque or SO.

I imagine he's just old fashioned!

Not tax avoidance he is going to have to bank it.

You don't get receipts for rent paid monthly but should have a rent book if weekly rent.
  • He should have receipts, and a lot more besides!

This landlord is clearly dodgy, but if the rent is cheap, then maybe you have a reasonable deal

Because he wants to be paid by cheques he's dodgy? :/

Just old fashioned gets my vote too.

Receipts would be good but a cheque stub with the cheque no on is also good so when his cheque book is finished with tell him to file it and not throw it away.

You don't need a receipt for making a payment by cheque. There could be any number of reasons why this person prefers to be paid by cheque and none of them automatically mean tax-avoidance

nonesense, just because he wants a cheque in his hand certainly doesnt mean he is dodgy, just the opposite in fact.

What do you mean by 'a lot more besides?

Its just that when he fisrt signed the contracts and paperworkk etc they asked him to fill out a standing order form which he did but when it came to the day the first rent was due they knocked on the door asn asked for a cheque and have done so ever since (been 2 years) he asked them why they aren't going ahead with standing order but they just said "oh well we will see" and kind of brushed him off

Yes, contrary to conventional wisdom, HMRC does not find it easy to follow the paper trail of cheques

A cheque-book stub, filled in by the payer, is less than worthless

I think I am just a very suspicious person then! I thought maybe they could pay it into different bank accounts.
