Odd Ebay dilema.

  • My mum had the same situation and told the seller she would return the item if they paid postage, they wouldn't so she kept the item (not entirly sure what she did with it thou.)

If they want it back just stick it in the post back to them with no postage on it they if the want it back they will have to pay the postage plus an admin fee for "incorrect postage".
Just don't pay them for it, if i was you id politely tell them to get lost.

Well they emailed back, still quite adament that I need to pay again as I ordered it, they supplied it, and now I have it, and that its not their fault that it took RM a long time to deliver it.
Perhaps you should point out to them that it wasn't your fault either! Just ignore them - as I said, I don't know how they think they can force you to send it back.

Does the item fit in a letter box? if it does just post it with no stamp, this way Royal Mail will leave the seller a card telling them to pay the postage costs (+ a £1 fine)
If the item is too large for the letter box repackage it (exactly the same as you received it) take it to the post office and tell them that its not addressed to anyone in your house and the will return to sender.

Either way you don’t have to pay return postage costs and the seller gets his / her item back.

They are being particularly awkward; i hope this is reflected in the feedback you leave / left them.

Personally as a business seller im normally so impressed with the buyers honesty in this situation i will either thank them and tell them to keep it or pay in full the return postage costs.

What sort of monetary value was the item itself and what about the postal cost?

In these circumstances, most decent sellers would write off items that cost £10 or less.

That said, no decent seller would pass off second hand goods as new.

so she ended up with the item AND their money, I don't suppose that's what she does at tesco's as well? Keeps the money in her pocket and walks out with her shopping?
  • so she ended up with the item AND their money,

    Sounds fair enough to me.
They offered to return the item but the seller was unwilling to pay for this, so it was their choice that the buyer ended up with both the money and the goods.
I don't suppose that's what she does at tesco's as well? Keeps the money in her pocket and walks out with her shopping?
If Tesco made a mistake and then decided that the customer could have a refund and keep the item after they offered to return it, that is exactly what would happen.

Sounds fair to me if the RM had given Tesco the money for it if they lost her shopping on the way out too.

It's not quite the same as she didn't have the goods until after the refund.

I have just had a similar situation with an online store. they refunded me after a 28-day no-show, then a week later the goods arrived. I emailed to ask for a pre-paid label or freepost address if they would like me to return them and they said to keep them or pass to a charity shop.

Any original Ebay issues no longer apply (SNAD etc) because it has been refunded.

As others have said the original seller is lucky that the OP informed them of it's turning up.

If the seller keeps emailing then maybe a mention that Royal Mail are to be informed. I imagine the seller has claimed from RM.
