Web camera problems

Hi, I had been considering purchasing a new laptop because of various problems with my existing one. The main one was that it was very slow but after following the advice in this thread https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849 it has improved.

Another problem is that the webcam no longer seems to be working properly - all I was getting was a blank screen. Following some research I re-installed the drivers but now I'm not even getting the blank screen! Any advice on how to get it to work will be very much appreciated.

Thank you

    in a particular application?

does it appear to be working in device manager?

    presumably nothing covering the lens?

    does it have a light?

Thanks for the reply but I'm not very good with this sort of thing!

Not sure what I need to be checking for the first 2 questions but the next 2 the answers are 'no'.

start, run, devmgmt.msc to get into device manager, look for the camera and see if it say installed/working

what application are you using to view the black screen, a utility that came with it, or skype/yahoo im etc?

Hi, when I go to device manager and click on 'imaging devices' there are 3 listed - BisonCam NB Pro, Integrated camera and USB2.0 PC. Not sure whether I should have 3 there or not! It shows that 'the device is working properly' on all three. I can't see it stating 'installed' though - should this also be there?

The black screen no longer comes up but what I want to do is use Skype.

Hi, just wondering if anyone can offer any advice on what I can do with regards to my webcam problem.

When I try using the video in Skype it says the camera is already open in another application and should be closed. How do I check what other application this is?

    Thanks

No that I can see! I'm sorry but not much of a 'techie' and not exactly sure what I'm looking for or where I should be looking.

Is this an internal webcam or usb?

If the former, try disabling the devices in device manager, one by one, starting with usb

There's a fair bit of bloat on that machine if it's still slow
