Getting a proof of posting - how?

If your only selling cheap items on flea bay, can you get a proof of postage from the post office WITHOUT sending things by recorded or special delivery? If so, how do you get it? Do i ask the counter staff for a receipt of purchase of stamps or something?
Is proof of posting actually worth the paper its written on? I cant see what it proves other than that you physically dispatched the item. With a claim, this would make no difference would it? Proof of delivery is obviously a different story.

Just wondered...
if you want to claim you write a letter saying 'a while back I sent a parcel somewhere, with something inside and it got lost. could you please send me a cheque for £46. thank you'
seriously you need to be able to proof that you have actually posted something...
on a different note thank you to previous posters, I've now been able to order CoP cards online, which I did not know I could do
