Hot drinks (doesn't have to be honey and lemon if you really can't stand it...the heat itself is soothing and if it is the start of tonsillitis, might help kill the bugs).

I find Halls Soothers help too...just boiled sweets with gooey centre.

I didn't get as bad a sore throat as you, but do know that Lockets are safe when pregnant.

Also paracetamol and hot lemon and honey drinks.

Sorry I can't be more help. I seem to have avoided colds luckily when pregnant, which is odd as normally I get them easily. Do you really think you may have tonsillitis? If so, I'd go to GP.
  • Oh I so feel your pain! I had tonsilitis about a week ago, not nice! I was trying hot milk and honey but didnt help at all. Boots have "Glycerin throat pastilles" in blackcurrant which are fine for in pregnancy - I didnt find they did anything for me though. If you do think it is tonsilitis dont suffer, go get something from the doc. Mine was loads better in a couple days. Try having ice cream and ice pops to help with the soreness. Hope you feel better soon.

Boots do an own brand blackcurrent soothing cough medicine. Its a bit like the middle of lockets and tastes yummy. It does say suitable for pregnant ladies on the bottle.

I know just how you feel, i've had swollen glands since the weekend accompanied by sore throat, headache, eye ache and one stinker of a cold! I'm nearly 12 weeks pregnant so don't want to take anything other than paracetemol but they've done nothing so far! I'll have a look in Boots tomorrow, thanks narabanekeater

These http://www.comvita.com/lemonhoneylozenges.html are great for a sore throat - you can buy them in Holland and Barratt (though the packaging has changed since they did their website so the box will look different).

The ingredients are all natural, including Manuka honey, so should be fine during pregnancy. To be 100% sure best check with a pharmacist though.

Lemsip does contain paracetamol but the reason it's best avoided in pregnancy unless a doctor advises it is due to the other ingredients (decongestants, stimulants). Paracetamol alone is generally recommended as the best pain/fever relief if you have a cold or flu during pregnancy; ibuprofen is one you should avoid

lemsip has decongestant which they advise not to take.. boots do their own brand without decongestant in so basically soluble paracetamol and lemon.

I've used strepsils and lemsip max and everything else while pg.. as has been said it is only because it hasn't been trialed and I reckoned it was worse for the baby if i felt crappy and didn't eat than if I took a few meds and the tiny teeny itty bit got through to baby.. given how bad my throat gets i could convince myself of anything. If they asked who it was for I said my partner.

Pharmacist will say see the doc, which always seems like a waste of time for something like this..
