Medicines during pregancy?

Options
Evening all,

I'm 14+1 and have a really sore throat (like the type that precedes tonsillitis).

Can you recommend any non-medical solutions to soothe it?

Failing that, anyone know what medicines are ok to take?

Thanks in advance xx

Hot honey and lemon may help.

Paracetamol is OK to take when PG.

    Hope you feel better soon

Thanks, I feel ok in myself apart from the horrible scratchiness in my throat, so don't think paracetamol is necessary. Will go and have some hot honey and milk (got no lemon in) but not looking forward to it, I don't like honey :(

I plan to in the morning, the discomfort has only just come on this evening so I'm hoping for something to soothe it until I can get to one tomorrow.

During my pregnancy I allowed myself a shot of whisky for that kind of sore throat and then warm cloudy lemonade. The whisky really helped, and since I didn't drink at all when pregnant I don't think that was reckless.

A pharmacist will tell you honey and lemon is all you can have. It doesn't help, but they won't give any other advice because nothing is tested on pregnant women to know if it's safe.

  • When I was pregnant, I had a slight sore around 16 weeks and it was difficult to swallow so I started drinking Lemon and ginger tea. It worked wonders for me. Honey and lemon is good too, so i've heard. Its always advised though to seek better help from your gp, nurse or pharmacist. Hope you get better soon.

You could try sucking on some boiled sweets.
  • Steam inhalation is always good. Get some menthol crystals from the chemist, or something similar. You need to do it quite a few times and it is good if you end up with a blocked up nose. Hope you feel better soon.

Althought most drugs aren't tested on pregnant women, there are tests done to determine effects in pregnancy, and then any use would be closely monitored, so it is now known what can safely be taken. It's not correct to say you cant take anything but a if you needed anything more than just soothing symptoms, eg if you developed more of an infection, then your GP could prescibe something. There are certain antibiotics for example that are the recommended ones to use if you do have to take while pregnant

But I was talking about the pharmacist, not what a gp can prescribe. Very little over the counter is offered to pregnant ladies, sadly.
