If you are saying that pinging google worked at the point of failure (ie websites in ie don't work, but pinging does), then the problem may be down to ie configuration. Could you elaborate on the exact symptoms?

Have you removed all the tick boxes from ie, tools, internet options, connections, lan settings?

could you post the results of start, run, cmd
    ipconfig /all >c:\1.txt
    notepad c:\1.txt

  • My current speeds are also poor, it may be congestion at the exchange.., throttling by the isp, or the fact there is nowt on telly..

  • Emmzi,

    the ipconfig results are ok.

the ping results conflict a bit with your earlier test.

you should be also able to go to 192.168.2.1 in ie, and see if the router still thinks it is connected to the internet.

    if ping 192.168.2.1 works and

    ping https://www.google.co.uk and ping 72.14.207.99

don't (at the point of failure), then something is either wrong with the router or connection.

The other thing to watch out for is that make sure you are connecting to your router and not the neighbours. Does it drop the connection with a wired ethernet connection?

    Hi there...

yes, bit hard to catch it not working when you want!

Def. not neighbours, theirs has a different name (and is password protected)

I doubt it's the router as I bought and tried a different one yesterday..same result.

Which brings me back to the line..and I can't convince BT to send me a PROPER engineer to look at the exchange and my house!!!

  • To make sure it is not wandering to other routers..

right click on your wireless network icon, view available wireless networks, change advanced settings, wireless networks, highlight your ssid, properties, connection. Make sure "connect when this network is in range" is ticked. Click OK, advanced, make sure Access point (Infrastrucure) networks only is selected, and automatically connect to non-preferred networks is unticked.

hate to say this but my friends and I have been having similar problems with BT at the moment....theres three of us and we live a few miles apart and are served by different exchanges....wired/wireless...you name it we all normally work on wireless but we kept our standard hard wired adsl modems just in case (we know how good the BT helpdesk can be ;( )

over this last week we have been talking to those cowboys in the Indian call centre and really all we wanted to know was if there was a problem at BTs end....but no....they insist you go through their checklist....boring AND a waste of time...we all knew our home equipment was working fine....we are all still waiting for a "call back" as well....the service has since come back on....our thoughts are since we are all on the old BT internet Broadband....are they subtly wanting us to change to their new "all in one " packages...we are very suspicious....just wish NTL would come here then we can dump sky/bt and bt phones....

    Albert,

thanks, have done that. Sadly won't get a chance to check it with a good gaming session until next weekend... hopefully BT will also have sent a man with a toolbag by then...

    Appreciate your help.
