in Techie Stuff
I am having the worst problems with my broadband connection dropping.
I was hoping if I tell you what I’ve tried, you could tell me if there’s anything I may have missed, or if I have to wait for BT to fix stuff?
I have tried..
- switching off everything else electrical
- replacing microfilters
- trying with firewall on/off
- full system scans
- removing skybox connection
This applies to both desktop and laptop, so I don’t think it’s my pc…
BT say it looks like there’s a burglar alarm on my line – there isn’t! There never has been! I also don't have caller waiting or 1571.
Is there anything I might have missed, or do I have to just be calm until they can get an engineer out???

You have not said what method you use to connect to your ISP i.e. USB modem or router. More details may be helpful. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

not very technical am I, sorry :-)
I'm using a Belkin ASDL modem with wirless G router. My signal quality is 'excellent' so I don't think it's that...Debt free 4th April 2007.

Have you tried connecting the router directly to the master phone socket, to eliminate the additional wiring in your property?
If your BT master socket is like this:
you should be able to easily isolate the extra wiring and plug straight into the test socket. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Yes it simply unplugs after removing the two small screws. You should have a master socket for each phone line. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Cheers. Have found it, seems to be working. I'll MMORPG for an hour, see if it holds.
Final questions!
- if it doesn't drop, that means it's something electrical in my house?
- if it does, it's the line?
- is it dodgy to just connect to test socket every time I want to do online gaming?Debt free 4th April 2007.

Sometimes the extension wiring is done with the wrong type of cable i.e. burglar alarm cable etc. which looks very similar but does not have twisted pairs needed for ADSL. See how it goes but using as you are eliminates your house wiring. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Ok.. playing off main test socket.. microfilters in.. signal still excellent.. connection still dropping.
Guess that means it's an engineer to go to the exchange. Thanks for your help.. I would have gone nuts if I hadn't checked every angle I could at my end.
Just as well I'm away this week or I'd be pining too much for my gaming!
thanks again.Debt free 4th April 2007.

When you say "signal still excellent" is that the wireless signal? You could be getting interference from another device nearby. Have you tried changing the wireless channel? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
