Maybe I should say I contacted Vodafone before travel and told them where I was going and that I needed the phone for emergency use only.....what do I need do .....they have admitted that they could have supplied more information but say I should have checked the website!
EU law states the phone should be stopped after £50 in the EU to stop this happening .....I was on a EU phone and EU contract but outside the EU.........
If anyone else has had the same problem contact me...may have some good news and a surprise ......watch this space
Hi kongsdoken,
Further to my email last weekend I can confirm that I've received your reply and as promised will be coming back to you during the course of today to discuss things further with you.
For clarification, as the usage in question occurred outside of the EU I'm afraid the data roaming spend cap wouldn't apply in this instance.
Kind regards,

Hi! Did you get anywhere with Vodafone on the matter? I'm in a similar situation and any help would be much appreciated as we have twice the penalty to pay

AFAIK O2 do have a default £40 spending cap in place unless you specifically ask them to increase it.
To be fair (and you know I am no fan of Voda, far from it!) all the operators are required to have an automatic cap in place, however this is only for roaming within the EU. There is no legal requirement for them to have a spending cap when roaming outside of the EU, and there's probably no chance of them doing so voluntarily. Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
Where have you been for the last few years. The news has had loads of stories about roaming costs and the EU introducing a cap of €50 in any one month before your network has to limit you unless you opt out.
As others have already said, Vodafone answered the question you asked. If you had said 'is there anything I need to do to avoid coming back to a large bill' they would probably said 'add passort to you account and turn off data roaming'.
I suspect that this has been going on for so long now (years) that the older stance of 'we will reduce it by x%' is now ending/ended.
The same would have happened with most/all networks, the only way to avoid it is with PAYG.
he said he was in africa not eu so it doesn't apply. i turned mine off just to be sure it wasn't going to connect i use pay as you go mobile while i am away.My Signature is MY OWN!!0 -
I have had big problems with Vodafone they cannot pass information between dept it would seem?
I have recently took a contract out with Virgin it would appear that there customer service is a little better.
However on virgin you can set a credit Limit. Is this not the case with Vodafone? this would at least alert you to the fact you were running up a bill. The measure of love is love without measure0 -
It's six of one and half a dozen of the other really.
On one hand, you should know to switch off data for fear of ridiculous costs when going abroad, but on the other hand Vodafone should explain this to you at the beginning of the contract.0
