did as asked above was told to expect a response in 48hrs...I have received nothing ......shows what sort of company Vodafone are !!

Maybe I should say I contacted Vodafone before travel and told them where I was going and that I needed the phone for emergency use only.....what do I need do .....they have admitted that they could have supplied more information but say I should have checked the website!

EU law states the phone should be stopped after £50 in the EU to stop this happening .....I was on a EU phone and EU contract but outside the EU.........

If anyone else has had the same problem contact me...may have some good news and a surprise ......watch this space

Well, this contradicts a little to what you said above.

Vodafone's website is very vague, and tells you very little about going abroad.

    This website
http://help.vodafone.co.uk/system/selfservice.controller?CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&PARTITION_ID=1&CONFIGURATION=1000&ARTICLE_ID=2471&CURRENT_CMD=BROWSE_TOPIC&SIDE_LINK_TOPIC_ID=1009&SIDE_LINK_SUB_TOPIC_ID=1081&SIDE_LINK_TOPIC_INDEX=null&SIDE_LINK_SUB_TOPIC_INDEX=null tells you no specific information, and if you click on the link to the 'Travelling Abroad' page, it takes you back to Vodafone's homepage!
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

You seem to have popups disabled as it opens in the new window.

    http://www.vodafone.co.uk/personal/index.htm >> Price plans >> Travelling abroad

    South Africa:
If you've not opted in to Vodafone Passport - or you're not in one of the countries it covers - you'll pay Vodafone World prices when you make or receive calls and texts outside the UK.

Make a call Receiving a call Send a text Send a picture message Data
    80p a min1 75p a min2 35p3 37p4 £3 per MB for the first 5MB. £15 for every 5MB after that..
    • 1 Calls are charge in 1 minute increments.
    • 2 Calls are charged in 1 second increments.
    • 3 Plus your standard plan charge for sending a UK text message.
    • 4 Plus data charge which is dependent upon the size of the picture.

  • I think some of the comments are unfair - Most people even if they do know a bit about data roaming certainly would not expect a £4,000 bill and calling the CUSTOMER SERVICE prior to travelling you would indeed hope that they might point out that the customer could inccur high data charges.

I find it hard to believe that the large networks would not have a system in place where they should/could alert a customer to a high bill charge - I mean someone who has been spending at a guess £40 a month to suddenly spend £4,000 should instantly get a block on their account or informed that charges are high before it gets to a level that it has in this case - I mean do Vodafone really think that someone would actually want to spend 4k on a phone bill?

They are too shambolic to have time for thinking and too lazy to think and too greedy to miss such opportunity to make money.

AFAIK O2 do have a default £40 spending cap in place unless you specifically ask them to increase it.

Also it takes up to 2 weeks for the info fro, the foreign network to get into the uk networks billing system so even if they were actively looking it could well be too late :(

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned that data roaming is set to off as default on an iPhone. When you slide it to on, there's a warning about how you will incur high roaming costs.
Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug). ;)

if your into phones then maybe you would know this, I am not ..that why I called Vodafone and told them where I was going!!!! obviously there own staff do not know the implications of roaming so why should I..

Because it is up to you to know what deal you're getting into. Would you sign up to a loan without reading what the figures are? No. Same applies with a mobile.

And as said, you asked the wrong question. You asked a question which I, with an IQ of 150 would interpret as "do I need to do anything to use my phone?" and you got the reply to that.

As to the £50 "blll shock limit", it doesn't apply as you are outside the EU. In fact in countries like Cyprus, it counts in the Greek part of Cyprus but not the Turkish....
