You only have to let them know if you recieve points on your license or get a ban!!!
When you buy car insurance you are asked two questions, claims and penalties. If you receive a penalty at a later date and you don't advise your insurer then your insurance could be invalid because your license is not what you told them it to be. In your case your license remains as it were before this incident!

If you do tell them they will probably just tell you this but on the other hand they may think you are prone to speeding and increase your premiums to cover themselves!!!

Let me guess the state - Staturory declaration - Queensland ?

I've a friend who seems to get done every time we go to Oz. At the last count he had 5 tickets in the past 4 years in Oz. On one trip he got done twice on the same bridge - once on the way to Avalon Airport, and about half an hour later on the way back again.

He just bin's the tickets. He's never had any problems at immigration, and they won't try to extradite you for speeding.

However, they do give you de-merit points on your 'Australian license'. Too many points and they will ban you from driving in Oz in the future. This will apply to you regardless of what license you are using to drive. If you're banned, and you get stopped driving there, then you'll be for the high jump.

My husband also received a speeding ticket on the Gateway Bridge Brisbane also an admin fee from the
rental company. He paid it and the photograph sent with the ticket was so clear there was no doubt
    as to the driver's identity.
  • This was in South Australia. The trouble is if I don't pay I will end up worrying about it. Particularly as it says that if not paid by due date additional fees will apply. And to be honest, ozzy authorities appear to be so anal, I wouldn't be surprised if they take it further!

If they don't have your credit card details, then don't pay it. You have nothing to lose. It's one of the advantages of being a foreigner. After all, you don't know who was driving, so if you pay up, you'll be paying a penalty for something that may not have been you. The fact that you know who else it could have been is irrelevant.

Don't let yourself worry. There are plenty of people that use this forum that have driving offences (if you can call them that) hanging over our heads for such things as praking fines. I have never paid and this is in England. OK its not the council but I still get threatened by legal action and the like but who cares.

    Ignorance is bliss!

I got pulled for speeding in Australia a few years back, while on honeymoon. We lived in Singapore at the time. I have a UK licence.

I told the officer we were leaving Australia the following day. He was friendly enough. Officer said it's a $200 (ish, can't remember exactly) fine and I have a choice. I can either pay the fine or ignore it.

I chose to ignore it. They wrote to the UK address displayed on my licence at least a couple of times to chase payment, but that's all. I did keep the letters for souvenirs but I've lost them now.
  • We got back from 5 months travelling to find one waiting for us. We binned it. We've been back several times and it hasn't been an issue.
If you want to make sure the car hire company can't charge to your credit card, change/cancel your cc number.
It is not worth the Aussie authorities time, effort or cash to chase you further.

I got one years ago on a Working holiday visa, ignored it. They never followed up, no chasing letters.

I now live in Australia too
