Smartphone, stupid eyesight
I decided that I'd like to get a smartphone so I took myself off to Carphone Warehouse - it's the nearest place to work - to see what was on offer. My eyesight is not what it used to be and, in fairness, it was never that good! Having explained to the salesman that I wanted one that had text large enough for me to read, I was told that the only people who wanted large text were old people and technophobes. I assured him that I was neither of those things and that it seemed odd that there was no way of increasing the system font which is the first thing I would do when setting up a new PC. He agreed and offered to look into it and call me back - I'm still waiting.
I would like something that's good for text-based applications - SMS and e-mail in particular. I'm not too fussed about cameras but I am interested in music and one of the driving forces for getting a 'phone was to use one of the apps that are available to control my Logitech Squeezebox system. SatNav would be useful but as I don't drive, I'd want it for walking only. I'd prefer an Android based 'phone if possible but I wouldn't automatically exclude anything.
I don't mind tinkering with the 'phone once I've got it to get it set up to my requirements but I want to know that it's possible to achieve my goal before I pay out any money. I'd also prefer not to invalidate my warranty to do it.
Does anyone have any suggestions, please, or should I just accept that the Carphone Warehouse's salesman was right and that I am an old technophobe!
Thanks, TWM.

Basically you can increase text size but not good enough in most cases for someone that requires reading glasses 2+ to read without glasses . System font have a limited amount of size increase compared to a PC due to screen size . You need to try some phones Samsung Galaxy S one of the more expensive with large screen is what i use .
Music Maps Read Books Email Twitter Internet etc all all usable but i need my reading glasses on to use the phone .

Trouble is recommendation request posts turn in to polularity contests of the products, that does not help really (only the herd followers) .
On my SE Satio which is now obsolete, quickly looking at SMS>Settings one of the options is font size, and gives a range of small medium large and default, I'm quite certain my k850 and other handsets had this option too, in fact I do recall a colleague choosing to keep his battered samsung flip phone as the font on the display could be displayed very large. So I suspect the option is there on most handsets.
Satnav will heavily drain the battery and anything over 60 mins is pretty dam good going

You can change Android font sizes using Spare Parts from the Market, so depending on how much you want to spend, there are going to be a lot of options for you.0

Interesting, does it work very well? The description on the Market of what it actually does is virtually non-existent.You can change Android font sizes using Spare Parts from the Market, so depending on how much you want to spend, there are going to be a lot of options for you.Stompa0 -

T-Mobile are selling the T-Mobile Mini Pulse, which is an Android phone, for £29.99. Match that with a cheap sim only deal ad it would probably meet your needs.0

Problem with that is is has a pretty small, low res screen.0
