Excellent, many thanks, I'll give it a try.
Hmmm, I've now done that and I don't get it. It says:

    Font size
Overall size of fonts, this only works within this screen.

so it's not setting font sizes globally. Also, for me, the setting doesn't persist, so once I've quit spare parts it returns to the default.

    Am I missing something?????

It said that on mine as well, but it worked fine in other places, such as the browser, the settings (as shown above) in messages etc

Can't say I did anything special other than set the size and check a few apps.

Strange, oh well I'll give it a miss. Font sizes can already be changed in Browsers and Email, so it's not a major thing for me.

I have that middling age things-at-close-range eyesight thing, can tell the colour of your eyes at 200 yards but not the ingredients on a can of beans! Anyway I do think resolution makes a big difference, my good old O2 XDA Zest only has a 2.8" screen but is 640 x 480 pixel and is therefore very sharp, I am OK with even quite small text on it. Some of the cheaper phones have pretty big screens but not many pixels.
