Paypal - No, I don't want to set up a Direct Debit

Paypal just irritated me for two reasons...
I have used Paypal for years with no problem; had a credit card on there for when I use Paypal to buy things and a bank account set up for when I sell on eBay and need to withdraw from Paypal.
Last year I got married and Paypal's process for changing my surname on my account was so convoluted that I simply closed my old Paypal account and signed up for a new one with my married name. I added my credit card again and have been happily paying for things ever since. No problem.
Anyway, I recently sold a load of stuff on eBay, so I needed to add my bank account to Paypal to withdraw the funds.
First issue - I tried adding the joint current account that my husband and I have. It wouldn't let me because the account is linked to another Paypal account (my husband's I assume). I don't have a current account of my own. Why on earth can't two people with the same postal address use the same joint bank account on Paypal?!
Second issue - So, instead I had to register one of our savings accounts. It's one that's normally empty. We use it as a holding pen for savings sometimes before they get moved into accounts that pay higher interest. I added the account and requested a withdrawal to it (about £190). This went through fine.
However, I can only ever withdraw £650 in total to the account, unless I verify the account. Another few rounds of eBay selling and I'd hit this limit and be unable to get my money out of Paypal.
I then found out that the only way to verify my account was to set up a direct debit from it. I don't want to do this; I've never had a Paypal DD before and I happily pay through Paypal using card. The account is normally empty so I don't want a DD set up on it.
Do you think I can go through the process, set up the DD, then just cancel it with the bank once it's set up? I can't see why Paypal would ever charge me via the DD as I pay-as-I-go with credit card.

Hi there
Welcome to the unusal ethics of paypal policy may i ask also
When i used to sell on Paypal many years ago. I too had the same problem with them and they are known for holding onto money or possibily closing down the whole paypal account they see fit if they think they suspect a ponzi scam or sales form ebay(i am not asssuming that of you however just how paypal works i have many problems with them in the past over many items i suppply online by my businesses)
Your best bet is to contact them by phone the number can be found on the say no to 0870 website. and speak only to a indepentant account manager and not the customer service team( who i suspect are based in the philipeans! Nice country crap customer services on paypal behalf they say one thing and never act upon it)
excuse my spelling im on a large keypad but if you get the general idea they could be of some use but i wont hold my breath.
paypal likes to verify bank accounts in the U.k and the bank account business is a double wammy of one !!!! up in my option.
They say they use it to pay a small amount of money into the account (usally a pound and 2p or something like that) and you have to check weither it is been received and verify it in your account by your paypal limits but they also retain when you remove your account details your account details just in case you get someone complaining and asking for their money back. Items not received or that line of flase claims in some respects.this is the big problem with paypal. Their control freaks and i have even noticed ebay now taken a step back with their own setup of the paypal system but still linked to paypal which uttly fails beyond belief.
You best bet is set it up then instruct your bank after you receive payment to remove it from the account and issue you a new credit card if that is your primary funding, there is no way around it unless you of course sell your items on amazon ect, and use a different payment processor such as amazon's payment system or google checkout which is a very secure way also and less hassle.
another way round it is to set up a merchant account but being in the u.k( ipresume) many of our banks do not have this in place and it can be found mostly in the USA were paypal is based. These types of account work in major usa citys form major top banks provide authority on yourself form activation, One thing in this country we all dont have from the banks here,(lazy banking system i mean compared to the us)
google the words "paypal stole my money" or closed my accounts and you can read the horrors paypal have done on many over the years. there was a really helpfull site one time on google i seen which gave help and advice but i am not allowed to show it on here being a affiliate site also.
hope that helps and hope i have not scared you. but you have to play there way until you get your pot of gold. its a bank and paypal policy to protect you and your infomation (and paypal if something goes wrong also thats there way of seeing it)"MSE Money saving challenges..8/12/13 3,500 saved so far :j" p.s if i been helpfully please leave me a thank you but seek official advice at all times from a pro0 -

Its for security - the withdrawal limit will remain until you have verified you are who you say you are.
I can honestly say, after years of having a DD with Paypal, I have never had any issues with it. I use the DD to pay for purchases with the card as a backup. Never had a problem.
Plus, a good MSE tip. Paypal put two amounts, both upto £1 each, into the account and you then log on and tell Paypal what those amounts were. You can then keep those two amounts. So you get money for doing it as well!0 -
DebtHater - do you have the option in your Paypal account to stop paying by DD and solely pay by card?
As I said, it wouldn't let me set up my current account on there, because my husband has the account on his Paypal account. So, I had to add a savings account that is normally empty. As a result, I don't want a DD set up on the account because I don't want any withdrawals being made from it...
I can understand them needing to verify things but as you've both said, they deposit money into your account and you then have to tell them how much it was. When I set up my first Paypal account years back this was all that was involved in the verification process. I have no problem with that part of it. I can't understand why a mandatory DD helps them verify who you are.0 -
Mine has a Direct Debit on it. All it means is, if you buy something and use Paypal and the money isn't in the paypal account, it will taken it from your card with the Direct Debit. It'll take a few days to go through, but once you've hit 'pay now' on eBay, it will automatically go through and no need to wait for it to clear. Thank you to everyone!

Why's it paypals fault that your account has a withdrawl limit? That's your bank not paypal. Open another current account and use that.
Please re-read my post. Paypal have set a withdrawal limit from Paypal to the bank account, unless I do their verification process which now includes setting up a DD. It didn't used to, and I can't see why it is necessary.
My husband and I have a joint current account and I don't see why I should have to set up another current account purely so that I can use Paypal. The bank account has both of our names on it so it's frustrating that we can't each add it to our Paypal account, as these are in each of our names.0 -

As per my original post, I have a credit card set up so any payments made via Paypal come from that. I'm happy with this set up and so don't need a DD arrangement.0 -
With regards to setting up a DD on a savings account I'm certain you won't be able to, or at least I've never heard of a savings account which allows DD's.0

Well I wondered about that as well to be honest. It's an instant access account and I've ordered my Paypal withdrawal to credit the account so we'll see if that goes through OK. But I also wasn't sure that the bank would set up a DD on it. When I added the account to withdraw to Payapal did ask if it was current or savings so I ticked savings.
Hubby never sells on eBay so I guess I could get him to remove the current account from his Paypal account so that I can add it to mine.0
