Are you in the Milton Keynes are by any chance? MK is plagued with cheap and poor quality aluminium lines. Luckily I still get a respectable 3 to 4Mbps but I know many people near me get such poor speeds.

If I get 32Mbps then I will be happy. Anything more and I will be chuffed to bits.

No Chesterfield, the engineer had these maps, that showed the cable drawings, 3 lots of alluminium :( , im still happy with 16 though, its nearly 2 megabyte a second download, and my pings a lot better.

BT have also stated that there's no cooling off period if I sign up to the Infinity package. Is this correct? I don't mind paying the high monthly fees on an 18 month contract if I get somewhere near their estimated speeds but if I get something much much lower, surely there is some comeback or get out clause? I thought the distance selling regulation also covered services as well as goods? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Doesn't cover this. Has never covered ADSL either. You get what you're given which is "up to 40Mbps". If that's 1Mbps, then the contract has been fulfilled and you're committed. The supplier has broken no promises and the estimate need not be kept to. There is an upper limit, but no lower limit.

Normally, for ADSL, if you wanted to know if a line was any use you'd sign up on a one month contract (cost say £250 ish for the line setup and ADSL set up and one month line and one month BB) and could then throw just that money away if it's not good enough.

You can get a FTTC 12 month contract from others (than BT) but AFAIK that's the minimum term.

Thinking about getting FTTC service - what alternatives are there to BT at the moment?

If the OP is in Milton Keynes there is currently a trail of FTTH from the Bradwell Abbey ( Fishermead) exchange, it's meant to finish in October. I have just had it fitted and it's much better than the 5-8Mb I was getting.

Only BT and Plusnet are on the trial bit the engineer was telling me he had been trained on a number of different service providers equipment so keep an eye out. The estates who have coverage are: Monkston, Monkston Park, Kents Hill, Walnut Tree, Browns Wood, Kingston, woughton on the green, woolstones. I think I have got them all but there might be a couple more. Broughton doesn't seem to be one of them strangely.
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

Did you mean FTTC or FTTH? If you did mean FTTH then this is the first I've heard of it. I'm in the Bletchley area and I've not heard anything about FTTH. Having said that, I can imagine FTTH to be very costly and something targeted towards businesses rather than residents. The speeds of FTTC are plenty fast enough to keep me going for at least a few years (if not longer). By then, I'm sure costs for FTTH will be a lot cheaper and more geared for residents.

Bletchley will be FTTC (Cabinet) and I notice that a lot of new cabs are springing up around West Bletchley at the moment. I'm on the FTTH/P trial (Home / Premises) which is only being fitted from Bradwell Abbey exchange and only to houses less than 15 years old on average due to the ducting in the street and after my install I can see why as it took the best part of 9 hours to complete.

I didn't think that the FTTC Infinity product was ready yet in Bletchley but I could be wrong, I know my line shows the FTTP 100Mb product available but it can't be commercially ordered even though on BT's own site you can place an order for it!!

I don't know about the whole of Bletchley but it's definitely available in the part of Bletchley I live (West Bletchley). I've got a BT engineer coming out on Friday to connect me up. I've worked out I'm about 400 metres from the cabinet and BT estimate my speed to be around 32Mbps. Some people think that I could see between 35 to 40Mbps as BT can be pessimistic in their estimates. We shall see on Friday :)

BT don't seem to want to invest.

I only get 6.5Mb max and Infinity won't be available to me until late 2012 (might be even later).
