I used just a black tea, no milk, this morning and it is great. Easy, cheap and tasty, thank you :j

    Hi
I've got mine in the oven now, I used tea with milk and it's been soaking since this morning. The mixture was a bit sticky so I added a little water, it smells lovely and I can see that it has risen. I saw a recipe like this (is it Bara Brith?) on the Hairy bikers and have wanted to try it since.
    Thank you!

Sorry to sound so dumb, but by cup of tea do you mean hot water and a tea bag or a cup of tea with milk like you'd drink?

Just typing this question has made me feel stupid, the answer is probably sooo obvious - sorry!

No such thing as a stupid question - you only know if you ask. I would do it black but milk and sugar would only make it a bit whiter and a bit sweeter.

I'd forgotten about tea loaves - no fat either (unless you spread it with butter). My local "corner" shop is selling utterly butterly for £1 instead of £2 something - i will go and buy some for cooking even though I don't like it neat.

There is the actual cooking costs (i.e. oven) to factor in but I tend to bake something when the oven would be on anyway.
I wanna be in the room where it happens
  • Thanks for all the responses and for not making me feel silly :o

I have added currants to my shopping list and will be trying this recipe this week - I will keep you posted (I don't think I can poison myself from these ingredients can I?)

    Hi there

Just reading the thread to see if anyone else has tried the cake! Delighted is is getting such good reviews.

Re the tea, yes it is black tea, I just pop teabag in mug, pour in the water then pour it all on top of the currants and leave until cold. I should have been clearer but have made it so often now just write recepie on automatic pilot.

    Enjoy everyone!

Thank you Grumswifie for the tea loaf recipe. I made one last night and it was gone before you could blink, a definite hit! Just took another out of oven, it smells so good :)
