Agree Candy - and they're free!

When collecting hazel for bean sticks, I tend to go for the ones that are about 11ft tall, the top 4ft is much more branchy, so the bottom gets used for beans and the top for peas.

Don't try to carry home more than 8 at a time or you will get in a right mess, and those swing gates they use on footpaths now can be "interesting" to negotiate. Always carry string or cable ties with you as this gives you a bit more control when carrying home; if you walk down narrow lanes with hedges on each side, do not attempt a 180 twirl to see if the dog is keeping up, it gets very messy - thank heavens there's no CCTV up our lanes.
  • Thanks for your replies. I have some bamboo canes from the local £shop so am going to use them. I will hold off till May to plant them out, my greenhouse is a good size and plenty big enough for all I have so far.

In other news I put more compost on my spuds today as the shoots were all 6-7 inches long. the other planters I have are still only small shoots so will hold off on topping them up. My parsnips have shown no sign of life, nor have my peppers, some lettuce and 4 pea plants. SO I am planning on binning them later, and using the pots to repot some tomato seedlings that I will be giving to my Mam and MIL as I have far too many.

DS loves the gardening as much as I do, and waters the seedlings every day for me. It's no exciting that he will grow and (hopefully) eat his own veg at such a young age. I think it's really important for him to understand where hsi food comes from.

    Thanks again for the advice

Which reminds me, I must remember to go and collect my 'free' bean poles :D
A creative mess is better than tidy idleness :D

For anyone who plants anything in loo rolls, last year I was reliably informed that you must bury them completely when you plant out or they will cause your plants' roots to dry out. It's worked well for me so far with sweetcorn last year and broad beans now.

I've transplanted my toms today but they're still indoors on a windowsill. Also transplanted some cucumbers but they're not happy - I've since found out they don't like being moved so early. My sunflowers are leggy and moved out today to the plastic greenhouse sorrounded with bubble wrap insulation - hope they fair OK.

    I'm in Bournemouth.

Oh and my strawberrys are in flower, nothing happening with my spuds but the soil is very wet where they are. Lettuce and spring onion coming up slowly in pots, they're outside next to a warm wall. My leeks seems to have stopped growing completely but are still green - are they dead?

I think I might be a bit early with a lot of things but the weather down here has been mild.
