Bike tyres, general advice on bike

Just covered another 10.5 miles with no pushing:j
Tackled hills as bad (or worse!) as I'll see on my commute.
Ok, took 1hr10 min, but with the hills and my fitness levels, I'm chuffed to bits (chuffed I actually made it lol).
Next dayshifts Wednesday, I'll do it by bike. It's 7.8 miles each way so I'll allow an hour to get there on time.
A guy at works doing some coast to coast thing in September (ends Newcastle). Might be a target.0 -
Not bas going for an early attempt on a cheap bike. If you keep it up and end up with a better bike you'll be covering that distance in half the time. Even without a better bike you should see your average speed increasing within a few weeks.0

Brilliant news Scotsman! Well done! My 5 mile commute takes me about 20-25 minutes dependent on weather/rider. Want to lose 7-8 stone? Pah! Nowt! Check out this guy for inspiration!

What that guys achieved is unbelievable. Absolutely brilliant.
I'd love to get to 14st (never been that for a while) and reading his story shows that anythings possible if you commit to it.
I used to always think I was too big to excercise, needed to lose a stone or 2 first but realistically, it's just an excuse.0 -

thats a good time, currently im doing 10 miles round trip in about 50 minutes. when i started back it was cycling this same trip took me 1 hour 15,so time is going down. when i was younger i could easily manage this in about 30 minutes really going for it on the same bike. so ive a lot to recover yet....work permit granted!0 -

Just go steady and try to enjoy it. You are at the point you are at. Stay safe- there is no shame in getting off and pushing in traffic if you feel unsafe, or if a hill is too big for you."In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act. "

That guy is a massive inspiration, when I was getting going I used to read about him over in the Bike Radar forum and it certainly helped. Anyone who uses the BR forums will also know he is a really nice guy with it.
I think as has already been said, the BF forums (particularly commuting) are a great resourse even tho there are a few trolls over there!
Us cyclists should get our own forum on here, I am surprised its not made more of, with so many cycle routes now its possible to get to work almost without seeing a car sometimes!! (well maybe not lol!)
If I had discovered MSE this time last year I may not be going down the road to BR

Had a practice run to work and back. Went the back road, home the main road. 14.5 miles
Main roads a bit hairy even for a Sunday, back road will do.
Playing with seat height, put it up twice, today the knees are feeling it a bit so i'll put it up a bit again. Also going to have a couple of days off just incase.0 -

as a guide,on an MTB you want your leg to be near straight when it hits the bottom of the pedal stroke
so adjust your seat height accordingly0 -
I got out for the first time this year, quick 12 mile blast, its good to get back in the saddle.
The only downside is after 6 months over winter without getting out the old !!! gets a little bit sore, that will go after a week or so however!0
