Renting a campervan - Ideas?

The OH and I lived in a camper van for a while abroad, and would love to take a trip or two in the UK in one, but couldn't afford to rent one. As I always see loads of camper vans in the UK sitting doing nothing, I was thinking we could try "rent" one from someone locally, but I haven't got a notion where to start. Most people these days don't really look at notice boards, can anyone suggest other ways I could do this? Gumtree? Freecycle?

You might find that you would have trouble getting insurance on it.
I was offered the use of one a couple of years ago, but couldn't get it insured so had to turn the offer down.
If you Google Motorhome+hire, there are companies that hire them out, but they are expensive, again I think because the insurance would be expensive for short term.

Theres a company that hires vw campers,
    http://www.sundrivehire.co.uk/vwcamperprices.php

They also do motorhomes, - good thing is the insurance is included in the package.

may be worth a look x

I know there is a website where private individuals can hire out their campervans to private individuals who want to hire one a bit cheaper. Once I've posted this I'll do a google for it - but I thought I'd let you know it's out there somewhere.... I can't remember who they are or where they are.... but I'm off to Google for them.

I googled and found tons. Here are a few links for you:

    http://www.camperbug.co.uk/vw_campervan/How_To_Rent_Out_Your_Van
    http://www.motorhome-city.co.uk/
    http://www.openroadscotland.com/owners.html
    http://www.lincolnmotorhomehire.co.uk/rent-your-motorhome.htm
    http://www.motorholme.co.uk/free1.asp

The links are aimed at the people owning the vans, which means that somewhere there'll also be a page for people wanting to hire them.
  • If you want to check out a variety of VW campervans definitely check out Camperbug. There are over 200 campervans on there, advertised by the van owners at a range of prices. :T
  • This is all great stuff, thanks very much all.
  • Has anyone actually had the van from Sundrivehire? Are they for real or just a scam?

    Their prices are stupidly cheap.
They claim to be massive in Ireland yet I cannot find them anywhere on the Internet.
They are not registerd to Companies House.
Their trademark is copyrighted in 2011, yet they claim to be 15 years old.
There is no trace of them on Yell.com or Thomson
They want full payment up front and deliver the van to your house.
They are based in Shrewsbury yet all sound like londoners!!!

I am tempted by the price, but when they say "if somethings to good to be true it probably is" I may well avoid it like the plague!!!!

I'm watching this thread with interest. I had exactly the same idea recently, thinking that hiring a van for a couple of weeks and touring around would make for a cheap holiday - until I saw the price of renting one !
