  • I've just watched this on OD as there's been so much hype about it. I didn;t think it was a terribly useful programme TBH because being an OSer for a while means that I already know all of the big things to do to reduce spend. I was shocked at the £1400 Christmas lunch though - that's ludicrous isn't it.

We're not having a traditional Christmas lunch as I don't eat meat but we'll be having the veggies, roasties etc and I've bought a salmon in place of the turkey. I haven't actually bought anything special for the main meal so with the salmon being £20 and the veg box (also including fruit) is £25, I will have spent £45 but that I expect to cover several meals.

For Bread Sauce, I boi up some milk in a small pan with a whole onion, a bay leaf and S&P. Once the onion is cooked through remove it and stir in whichever spice you fancy and bread until it's the consistency you want. The onion is delicious on cheese sandwiches too.

I don't think I could spend £1400 on food for Christmas-where would we store it all for a start. At the moment we are living out of the freezer to make room for Christmas food-everytime I create a gap I fill it with something like bread.

We did spend £160 in one shop last month. We bought booze for us and BILs hampers plus things like toilet roll, flour, long life juice and tinned goods for Christmas. By the end of that shopping session I was shattered-the thought of spending nearly ten times as much makes me want to go and lie down in a darkened room.

We have Yorkshire pudding with all meat - lamb, pork the lot.
I also have mint sauce on any dinner that has gravy with it.
It's personal choice and I love it.

Me too, DH hates mint sauce, says its like eating tea leaves
  • dare I say it

we are having bought beef wellingtons, made with beef fillet. Huge cost but heck it is christmas and a shin beef stew plus beans will just not do

I am another of those that makes meat stretch a long way and in fact only eat (organic) meat twice a week . I did buy an organic turkey once, years ago and it was £60. It fed 8 adults very well on the day and then it stretched and stretched. It was wonderful

croissants, smoked salmon, the works and not a turkey in sight this year

[QUOTEI'm tempted by the idea of bread sauce kittiej, what recipe do you use? ][/QUOTE]

Hi maman it's really easy, grate onion and cook/boil it in milk until the onion is soft, you can add seasoning at this point if you wish but I don't bother, then add breadcrumbs until it reaches the desired consistency - I would add these a bit at a time as the crumbs swell.

    Enjoy :)

Earlier on I took all my leftover bread bits round to the park to feed the ducks with my daughter for a cheap afternoon out. Meanwhile, I have two packets of bread sauce mix sitting in the cupboard. Perhaps this would have been more logical if I'd attempted to catch one of the ducks for Christmas dinner while we were round there :)

I'm making beef wellington. I made it last year instead of having a turkey and hubby loved it so much he requested it again this year. I used the recipe that was on Gordon Ramsey's Christmas.
The fillet is from a small producer whose beef is grass fed. Cost just over £30, (1.1 kilo) but it will be worth it and will make at least three meals for my 3.

I still need to decide what veggie option I'm going to have though!
