The lies about cheaper motor fuel this week

Motor fuel is cheaper this week, did you all know?
Not in the UK of course, where it is generally at least as much as if not more than it was last week and the industry is putting out the message that they are having to sell us the remaining fuel they had stored at the higher price - flamin' cartel crooks  - flamin' conniving government
But in Europe it definitely reduced by some percentage points in four countries I passed through last week and again yesterday.
I paid 1.33.5 per litre for diesel when I filled up in Dunkirk last evening.
EUROS!
PS I started this thread because the link at the foot of Guy's article to the "Budget 2011: Petrol Duty Cut" thread throws up an error preventing access and I haven't noticed any proper discussion of this ongoing major rip-off and broken promise yet on MSE.

What do you expect from the government?
And we'll all bend over and take it.0 -

Yes we will, because we're paying more tax on fuel to save the planet from C02 emissions.
Im not sure how paying more tax on fuel saves the planet, but the "experts" (the one's who haven't quit their jobs in protest) say so and therefore it must be true.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Our diesel prices are comparatively high but petrol prices are generally on a par with the rest of Europe.
At the end of the day, unless anyone is prepared to suggest where they would be happy to make up the shortfall, the "cut duty" argument is ill-thought and meaningless. As the garages profiteering? Well, fuel is a commodity like any other and it has a value like any other. Why shouldn't somebody with a sought after commodity be allowed to profit from it?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I say screw the f**king planet. This whole save the earth hippy crap is nothing more than a massive money maker that everyone is profiting from.
I liked life when we could buy 100 watt lightbulbs and keep them on until they blew. Buy paper without being nagged that we must plant god knows how many trees to offset our purchase. I'm beyond caring about the bloody planet and caring more about myself. We’ve had to remove your signature. There will be one or two lower but, on the whole, there is relatively little difference.
The AA fuel report for March puts the average UK price for unleaded at 132.9. That price is considerably lower than some European countries:
Denmark 144.51
France 136.87
Finland 136.87
Germany 140.09
Greece 138.44
Netherlands 145.92
Italy 133.05
Norway 157.26
Portugal 133.14
Sweden 134.16
As for diesel, we are more expensive. The UK average for March was 139.0 according to the AA. Only the Norwegians and Swedes paid more than us and only six countries in Europe pay more than £1.25.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. spotting a cut in a price that is increasing is difficult. Newspapers have ignored the fact that oil prices are unstable and high, and that over the last few months fuel has shot up at a pace. 1p cut is nothing compared to the increases in fuel price which seems to be going up by 1p every couple of weeks. So forecourts put their prices up on monday to have them 'reduced' on wednesday... maybe that's because it's how much they paid for their fuel on monday?
I'm on my bike 4 days out of 5 now... so I don't care so much

The underlying price is not increasing alexyne ... it is has been decreasing this past 7 days, but not in the UK.
I was very annoyed to see late last night that the prices on returning to my local Asda to buy milk was the same as the price it was when I left exactly 7 days ago which also happens to be 3% higher than it was 14 days ago.
Conversely, in near Europe, it seemed that every station I passed on a 650 mile journey 7 days ago which I passed coming back yesterday was noticeably lower by at least a couple of cents. In fact I noticed the price at my destination dropped a every day so that it had dropped around 3% whilst I was there in the last week.
As far as I know, none of those countries had a fuel tax change in the last week ...0 -

£ has been weak against the Euro for a few years now. making European prices seem more expensive to us than they do to people in the Euro zone.0 -
Even if oil prices dropped, we wouldn't see prices at the pump drop significantly now that the government know we'll happily pay through the nose for it.0
