I got a new job but jobcentre say ............

I got a very good news that I had been offered a new job start next Monday working with royal mail as a postman, but jobcentre say I still have to come in and signing on every fortnightly and still seeking active work because the job at post office is only 15 hours a week with £5.93 per hours. What the point of signing on ? They say I have to be at least 16 hours to come off Jobseekers Allowance.
Are they right to do this ? They also told me I cannot get any working tax credits either.

At 15 hours per week at minimum wages you won't be earning enough to get national insurance paid for so you need to sign on to get your national insurance credits...unless you want to pay them yourself.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

They cannot make you continue to claim JSA but you have the option of claiming JSA as you are working under 16 hours.
You cannot get WTC because you are not working 16 hours.0 -
Congratulations on the job
Are you single or part of a couple? Are you receiving income based or contributory JSA?
To quaify for working tax credits if you have children you have to work at least 16hrs, if you don't have children you have to work at least 30hrs and be over 250 -
Does I get £88.95 net pay from royal mail (Income tax and NI - will I pay it ?) and does my JSA pay me the same way or will I get less pay on JSA ?0

depending on your circumstances you need to work a minimum of 16 hours to meet the criteria for working tax credits unless your single, no disability and over 25 then it's 30 hrs unless over 50yrs.
They cannot force you to do anything but it is probably good advice to continue claiming for your National Insurance contributions and another part time job may become available to top your income up to full time.Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -
My daughter had to sign on too, they gave her sheets to complete.
She was working under 16 hours.
If you still want your NI paid then it is best to continue signing on.

I am lone parent with one son. I am on income based JSA. My income support was stopped last year because of my son age.0 -

No tax or NI and on that income no JSA but you do get NI credits.
If for some reason you worked 10 hours in any given week you would receive a top up of JSA if still claiming.Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.0 -

You won't qualify for any JSA payments.
Funnily enough, my daughter got taxed and paid NI, but has since received a letter from tax saying she will receive a tax rebate.
Unless it is a problem for you, I would continue signing on0
