Problem using my Debit Card on Scotrail trains

This has been ongoing since December of last year, when I used my Visa Debit card, I was told that the card was declined, which I was shocked at as there is always money in the account. As I have said this is ongoing and on the 7th January I was told by ontrain staff to leave the train as my card wasn't working and puchase tickets in the staffed station, my station is not staffed or have a ticket machine, I can't use my card in them either. Anyway on returning home from Glasgow I called in to see my bank manager, who said there was nothing wrong with my card and that it might be a fault with their machine. I was sent a new card out and the same is still happening. I can use the card online, in all shops and at staffed stations. I have complained to Scotrail about this and they have yet to admit that it is their machines at fault. What can I do?

A well known problem with Scotrail's card system and your not the first this has happened to see this thread to read all about it.

You could write a letter of complaint and hope that Scotrail does something about the problem, but as it will cost Scotrail a lot of money to put it right I doubt they will do anything other than send you some rail vouchers to appease you*.

*Might do,if you catch a Scotrail rep on a good day but not guaranteed.

We have sort of the same problem.
Our Visa Debit won't work and hasn't worked in ANY ASDA or Tesco petrol machines/pumps at least since 2009.
Money has always been in account but for some reason, these companies don't allow the card.
Made a complaint to Natwest and they said it was the companies problem.

    Complain to them.
Also, when this happens, it is very embarrassing.

Sounds like an online auth only card. Pay at pump and most trains can't do an online auth so the card is automatically declined.

You are joking right - they don't have good days, atleast not on the Ayrshire line!

The Rail Vouchers are a joke, I have yet to recieve the cost of the tickets back from Scotrail, I only got the £5 (which is what my fare costs) because they had not replied within 7 days. As I said, my station is not staffed so when I wanted to use the vouchers, I was told to go to a staffed station to use them, which would mean using the train to Hamilton Central, most likely get charged, to come back up to my station to go back out that night. When I complained to Scotrail about this, I got yet more vouchers! Then I raised the point about something else, missed a train by 30 secs as I had to go upstairs to purchase a ticket when there were staff with ticket machines standing at the corridor to low level, but no I had to go upstairs to buy it, I actually got the money back for that plus a £5 due to being over the 7 days, so I currently have £14 worth of vouchers. I was told by the staff at Hamilton Central, I can use the vouchers on the train, who wants to guess I can't?

If it starts 475128 then it won't work on trains, planes and pay@pumps.

    Nice one LeeUK.
Checked both my Husbands and my own cards and they both start with that number and it's no wonder they don't work at the pump.
At least you had the decency to say something because the companies themselves pretend there is nothing wrong and all look at you like your a s*-*bag with no money.

    Thanks.

I have one of these cards too although I don't use it as a main account. I like to use Pay@pump all the time so this card just would not do for me.
