How to tempt an ill dog?

  • Hi, sorry to hear this, although you want them to eat, as others have suggested things like bacon are very high in salt so aren't great for them on a regular basis - other things to watch are too many potatoes, turnip etc as they've got a lot of statch in them.

Mine is a bucket and will eat anything!! and frequently has things he shouldn't (when we're out) so can get the odd upset tum!

His favourites/gentle on the tum are:

Porriage - you can mix some of the normal dry meal in with this
    Scrambled egg
    Liver
    Chicken
    Kidney
Fish - I think he would literally kill for this!
    Rice with all the above

He gets cooked chicken & cabbage with every meal - I buy the value frozen packs, cook in big quantities and freeze them in individual portions - much easier!

Kinski - what a wee sweatheart

Good luck & keeping my fingers crossed for you both

  • our dog is way too picky about dog food so have resorted to browning then stewing either chicken or turkey breasts. I add a good lot of garlic (she goes mad for garlicky things)to the gravy, but no salt, sometimes a bit of tomato paste. once they're cooked I pick out the meat and chop it and put it back in the gravy, then mix a spoonful or so with complete biscuits. If she wasn't well though I'd leave out the biscuit.

Well I have found, as suggested, that she is enjoying food most that has been warmed up. She has had some pork sausage and bakers complete for breakfast after a walk halfway around the local reservoir and is now having a well earned nap.

Thanks for all the comments/help as they have really boosted me and my hubby as we were so upset and could not think past the thought that we are going to loose her. I do think she is playing on the food thing a bit to try and see what we will offer but cannot blame her there! lol.

You might want to rethink the pork it's very salty which will put a strain on her kidneys, your better sticking to white fish, chicken or turkey.
I'm glad your girl is doing well, long may it continue :T. One of the things with renal failure is that they can stop eating and become anorexic, on the odd occasion I've had to force feed Abby, I hate doing it but it does seem to work.

Never thought about it being pork even though I gave her it. Doh! (one of those days today)

The vet said it was keeping her eating that may be hard or that she may start being sick a lot. If she stops eating or starts with the being sick we have to take her back. Its this that worried me when she went off her food.

If she's being sick it could be that she has stomach ulcers ( that's what my vet told me ), my vet gave me xantac for her, I now have her on slippery elm, if you google slippery elm for dogs you can find out more about it. My vet knows I have her on this and luckily is quite keen on alternative remedies.

Sorry for the late reply. Poppy is not being sick at the moment but the vet says it may start to happen as she gets more ill.

Due to being given such a lot of great suggestions I have been able to keep her eating.:beer:The strong smelling bit is right as she is loving pilchards, sardines, tuna, liver and ox heart. Got her some webbox too which stinks when added into warm food. She is doing well most days but can see the difference in her more each day. Her coat is not as it was but we bathed her the other day and she felt better once done and enjoyed the hairdryer on her.

Has your vet not mentioned putting Poppy on a specialist diet, if you don't want to go down that route you could have a look a Burns dog food http://burnspet.co.uk/, they say that some of the food they have is suitable for dogs with kidney failure. I got in touch with Denes http://www.denes.co.uk/ and they were very helpful, the only things I give Abby if she's off her prescription food is a wee bit chicken or some white fish, poor soul was so used to getting all kinds of treats and now she gets nothing.
I hope Poppy continues to keep well.

They have said that it is that bad that a specialist diet is not going to do much. She is going off all the best stuff too such as chicken and our food scraps which she used to go mad for. I can tell she is going downhill fast as she was quite a bouncy, noisy girl although well behaved so not boistrous but now she barks much quieter and just wags her tail (no running around/walking backwards). She is sleeping a lot and eating less each day. We are just enjoying each day we have with her and making sure she feels happy and loved.

I'm so sorry , I'm keeping everything crossed that she'll be with you for a wee while yet.
