My item is returning to sender now what?

Item i bought was sent recorded delivery, contacted seller to say it hadn't arrived and only then did they give me the tracking number. They tell me it's being returned to them as i didn't collect it. I've had no card and didn't even know it was at the sorting office, they are now giving me the choice of repaying for postage or getting a refund of the item price only.
Are they allowed to do this?-can i open a dispute in pp and get my postage back to?

I can understand its not really their fault but to be honest sending something worth £6 recorded is a bit daft imo it was the postage that was pricey :(

When you bid and purchased the item you agreed to the postage costs. The time to haggle is before you commit to buy.
Unfortunately some posties don't leave a card if you were out when trying to deliver Recorded. It stays at the Sorting Office then gets sent back to the seller. If you still want the item, you have to pay postage again.

You would not receive a refund for the second postage costs as it's not the seller's fault, but RM.

But if you want to open a dispute for Item Not Received, you are entitled to a refund of the cost of the item plus the p&p cost.

By the way, please remember when leaving feedback that your seller has acted correctly.

Recorded delivery for anything is silly, a cheap item daft. Something I bought recently for a couple of quid was recorded & I wanted to ask the seller to send it ordinary post but was concerned that she would think I was trying to scam her, so just paid it. When it was put through the door without asking for me to sign I contacted her & told her that it was a waste of money & directed her to this forum. She's still advertising recorded delivery on her listings.
You can open an INR & you will get all your payment including p&p back, or pay again to have it resent, maybe the seller would send it without being recorded so that if it fits in your post box you will get it this time.

I'm sorry hermum, I cannot agree that Recorded Delivery is such a waste of time. It's 75p. The benefits are great both for the seller and the buyer and if the buyer is willing to pay that, then fine, if it limits my sales because of 75p, it's not been a problem at all.

The time to make postal requests is before the auction, not after.

Just a comment on directing a seller to this forum. Soolin and a few others give correct and accurate eBay advice. Most of the 'advice' on this forum is more opinion from buyers' and sellers' points of view, rather than correct answers.

topcat and the others do an amazing job in the Answer Centre on eBay.

Recorded is a waste of time as it rarely tracks. It is not a trackable service at all but a service which should supply proof of delivery, but again, rarely does.

By the way it is 74p plus normal, mail.

Op, you have paid and for whatever reason, the seller has not delivered. They can either send it again for free or you can file a INR with them.

You do not need to pay again.

On the Royal Mail website you go to Track & Trace, then put the number in and it tells you the current status of your parcel.

If the postie attempted delivery and didn't leave a card, it goes as I said to the sorting office then back to the sender.

If the buyer wishes the item they pay postage again.

Not all senders give the tracking details, not all buyers check. Either way, the onus is on the sellerr to deliver, not attempt to deliver. So if the buyer won't resend the item, the buyer can claim InR? There is nothing in Ebay or Paypal to force the buyer to pay again.

If it were John Lewis, I would not pay again nor would they ask.

It is rarer and rarer now for the message on track and trace to update past the your item is being processed message. When I had to use recorded for work I made a fortune by claiming back each of the 74ps that never updated as RM would send a book of stamps as a goodwill gesture for each. Most of the time I had about a 90% failure rate of ever seeing anything showing as delivered.

Likewise I never have to sign for any incoming recorded items here as they are all just left with my usual mail.

From a purely practical point of view my business or even my private sales , could not support the costs of paying for recorded on every item just because every buyer might be a scammer. I'm currently down to around 100 items a month, that would cost me £74 out of my profits to use recorded, and i'd ratehr keep that money for myself.

OP as others have said you are entitled to open an INR claim if you wish and you will get the whole of your original payment back. However you cannot force the seller to resend the item if they refuse to do so without an additional payment.

Perhaps eBay should have a word with John Lewis so they could work out a fair reposting policy.

It's the judgement of Solomon to make it fair, though.

Making the seller pay to post it out again- how is that fair?

Though I also agree it is unfair for the buyer to pay again for postage, or have to take out an INR case,
when it's RM who have failed to leave a card so the buyer would be able to book a re-delivery.

If only we could leave feedback for Royal Mail!

Solomon, John Lewis or Ebay. The law is the same. It is the responsibility of the seller to DELIVER the time to the buyer.

The seller choses the carrier, NOT the buyer.

Whilst you cannot force the seller on ebay to post again, you can file a INR and still a neg.

I think the seller is partly to blame here for lack of communication. If the buyer had been told when it was sent and given a tracking number, they would have known to look out for it and where it was.
