I agree, as soon as you say single parent, there are all these assumptions as to the person being !!!!less, on benefits and a bad parent who will spend your pennies on smokes and drink than educate their children.

I've started to say 'divorced mother of 3' instead.....doesn't quite run off the tongue so well though!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
• there is a single mother charity - called GingerBread - and it's new campaign is

Single Mothers - You're Brilliant!

I said to someone I know who works there - what is brilliant about them? Yes, a mother who has been left by her husband, or the father has died - they are brilliant if they look after the kids.

But some sl@g who was never married or in a proper relationship, pumping out 4 kids by 4 different fathers that she can't afford to raise - what is brilliant about that?

even she agreed that it was not brilliant.

single parents aren't all the same. some are brilliant - some are just unthinking sla@gs that can't keep their legs shut.

I must be missing something. I went onto the benefits advisor and all it said I could get is £65 per week. Is the big benefit money only available if you've got kids?

Yep

Find yourself a slapper, get her up the duff and move in with her whilst renting out your own place. Lovely money.
• .....why is every waitress in London, Polish or from some other Eastern European country - when we have loads of council estates full of benefit grabbing scum?

Because there's a recession in the whole of Europe, including Poland. But they do not pay the same benefits. Hence coming to England for a minimum wage job - even with cost of travelling - makes it worthwhile.

If you are British, on the other hand, with a couple of kids you get £11000 Housing Benefit, £5,150 Chid Tax Credit, £3,400 Uncome Support, £850 Council Tax Credit, £1,750 Child Benefit. So that's just over £22K. Are you going to earn that waitressing? After tax?

i was watching a tv show the other day, and this family that lived in a council flat could only afford one 42" flat screen and two games consoles.

it was sickening to watch this abject poverty in England in 2011.
...
I bet the tv wasn't even 1080p. It is truly shocking I agree.

It's okay quoting shock examples, like this, but we need hard evidence to inspire change.

Can someone possibly find a report that shows that if little Jordan isn't watching 3D telly by the time she is 12, then she is more likely to have underage sex or something?

Yea but you wouldn’t get any of that if you were single with no kids and you did have a couple of kids you would get a fair percentage of it if you were in a low paid job.

It’s not as easy to get a job as a lot of people on here make out. I know a couple of young people who can only get part time jobs they are all better off than they would be if they weren’t working. A couple are still at home with parents and the other get LHA toward a room in a house. But a lot of kids seem happy not to take the jobs and seem happy with the £50 or so they get in benefits.

I do agree, but having children as a job shouldn't be an option.

Can anyone recommend a good website to find someone like that? :D

BTW, it seems a bit unfair that some of the benefits are dependant on how much savings I have - if I've worked and been sensible enough to put a bit of money aside (from my wages that I've already paid NI, PAYE, etc.) then why does the benefits system expect me to cough up for things out of my savings if I get sacked?

Might as well just go and blow the lot on cheap wine and loose women now (which might solve the problem of not having any kids to claim extra benefits for).
