Hi
I have just tried to get a contract phone through one stop phone shop, with orange, and i have got an email back, saying that i have been declined to open with the network
I already have an orange phone and that is cut off in a few days, why is it doing this, it says check equifax, to find out, but isnt that credit scores, and i dont have a bad 1, no worse then any other student.
want to go with orange as its the cheapest deal
Any ideas? Should i just keep trying?

You should apply for O2 contract and will not surely be declined, i apply for orange after having with orange with 8 months and waz declined then i apply for 02 and now have two good deals with them and find every thing alright with o2. You can dial premeir no free and can make internatioanl calls free as well more over ur new phone will be unlocked0

Utter rubbish mate, all new phones from O2 come simlocked, and you have to pay ten quid to get them unlocked. i know, because I asked when my old contract expired and they said "ten quid please", to which I said 'off bog mate, I'll just unlock it myself for free' (which I could do, because I had the XDA 2i and there's a free unlocking program on XDA-Developers). It really does depend which network you're with and what kinda service you have, for instance I was on Virgin Mobile as a pay as you go customer for years with a manky old Nokia 3330, and when I left VM I asked them for an unlock code for my phone and they gave it to me for nowt, but I think they're one of the more generous networks when it comes to unlock codes. I had been a customer for a few years though, so they probably got their money's worth from me.
You can only make international calls for free with O2 if you use one of those 0870 services (and thankfully 0870 are still free on O2 which is really handy, pretty much one of the only things I regret about switching to T-Mobile.
I wouldn't EVER go back to O2 though, their customer 'service' is absolutely non-existent, shocking lack of any attempt to try and keep me on their network with any kind of decent deal on renewal just put me off them completely. Switched to T-Mobile, great deal on Flext, quality new phone (Vario 2), awesome fixed price for GPRS and 3G access on Web 'n Walk (£7.50 a month! when O2 charge £2.30 a MEGABYTE... go figure), I'm happy as larry. TMob only wanted a THIRD of the cost for the phone as Orange wanted for the same phone (just different branding) on their deals, and they weren't as good value as TMob.
So yeah, anyway... When my phone contract came up for renewal (September this year), I decided to apply for a contract with Orange to get the phone I really wanted (the Vario 2, sold by Orange as the M3100, also sold by HTC as the TyTn, but its original name is the HTC Hermes... Long story short, it's all the same phone, just different colours). Same situation as you, student, never been late with a bill, always paid on time via Direct Debit.
There's a number of things that can cause a company to decline an application - your credit rating is usually the case. Ironically, if you DON'T have a credit card, that can give you a lower credit rating than say, someone who has a credit card, spends loads on it and is always paying it off - the fact that they have one gives them a higher credit rating. Don't ask me why, it just does.
I also know for a fact that one or more of the credit agencies (not Equifax, I checked with them, but definitely one of the others) has INCORRECT details about me - I don't know how, as my first mobile provider (Virgin Mob, pay as you go only) had all my correct details - FROM ME. I only realised when I got a text message from their system saying that I had been declined access to the 18+ services - and I was 19 at the time. I rang them up to ask why, and they said a credit check came back as 'details do not match' - to which I said, what utter crap, I know that the details I've given you are 100% accurate because I'm ME! However, the onus is on you to make sure that your details held by credit agencies are correct, and you can usually apply online or over the phone to get a full report of your details held by all the credit agencies. I'd try Equifax and Experian - I have a feeling Experian are at fault here, however Virgin Mobile said that they use Equifax (at least when I rang them, and it was a few years ago now), so do check more than one. There's also a few web sites where you can check all the agencies at once, but don't expect something for nothing - you'll HAVE to pay for the privilege. Somewhere to use as a starting point: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=credit+check+agencies+UK&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a
I just realised too - until I started paying for a telephone line from BT (so me and my housemates could get broadband here), I always had problems getting stuff delivered to my termtime address. However, when I ordered my laptop from Comet over the phone, I told them 'I live here during the term time, do you want these details too?' and the bloke said, 'yep, give me all the stuff and I'll put it into the system' - and I gave him this termtime address as the delivery address, and critically, the telephone number for the house too. When the credit check was done, it all came out ok - it's quite possibly the fact that your details aren't verifiable against a history of good credit / reliable payments which has caused your application to be declined as much as anything else.
I would still suggest you check your credit records though. You can apply direct via the various agencies or you can go through a third party, do be careful about who you pay your cash to though and always read the small print. I just got Equifax to send me a printed copy of what they had on record, cost me a couple of bob.
Also, something else to consider: I tried applying for a T-Mobile phone and contract direct via their web site, and my application was declined. The next day, I walked into my local T-Mobile store, and asked to go onto the same contract with the same phone (Vario 2). They had a problem with the credit check ("it's come back as declined") but the guy just rang the T-Mobile helpdesk, spoke to someone - no idea what he said to him, or what was said back to him - but he said, 'yeah, don't worry about it, it's all ok, that'll be £85 quid please', and I walked out the shop with a brand new phone on Flext. If you can, try physically going into the shop and ordering over the counter, I got them to match the deal I was offered on the web site so I also think that going there in person can help your case too.
I was screwing at the time too, cause my O2 contract ran out a day after that! so it was pretty much imperative that I got my new phone asap, so I was glad it all got sorted out.
Best of luck mate!0 -
This happened to me to with OSPS, i contacted orange and they said no such check had been done, anyway to cut a long story short im not sure how it works but when a phone shop just a check on you for orange it is done through equafax and orange have informed me that it has nothing to do with orange, and have asked me to go direct to orange rather than through a shop but i havent because i have changed me mind about another contract
PS forget to mention whilst orange have turned me down 3 times now, O2 and t-mobile have happily passed me for 2 contracts if i want them0 -
i dont no how low my credit score is, but i have credit card, and a history of paying my bills etc
i used my home 'home' address so it shouldnt be about my term time address as i didnt show it. i have tried again, with e2save, where i got my previous orange contract, and hopefully it will work0 -
Basically (from what I've been told) when phone companies do credit checks on you, they use one of several companies to do the check. They provide the details you give them (name, address, telephone number, credit card details etc) and they take them and forward them on to the credit checking agency. The agency takes these details, compares them with their information on record, and if they don't match in any way shape or form, just spit back a 'no' with little or no information at all as to why the credit check failed.
Credit checking agencies are utterly !!!!!!! useless, if you'll pardon my language, but I really do despise them because they get their information about you wrong and it's up to YOU to fix the problem - at your own personal inconvenience - and in the meantime you could be denied services which you are otherwise perfectly entitled or qualified to receive. It can affect your credit rating and significantly change the conditions of any existing contracts - right down to the rates you're offered for a loan, a mortgage, car insurance... The whole system sucks, the burden of proof being on you instead of them. I hate credit checking agencies, but unfortunately they're one of those necessary evils... Grr.
The fact that there's several agencies also means that usually if you get denied once but subsequently accepted, they've used a different agency to check your details, so sometimes that can give you a clue as to which credit checking agency has the wrong details.!0 -
OSPS use equifax, and how the hell can i be turned down for an orange contract but be accepted by t-mobile and O2 on the same search0

Your phone may have been locked but i have had several phones on o2 and they definitely came unlocked.
This includes 2 handsets bought in the last 6 months on contract. Both are definitely unlocked because i sometimes use orange sim in them.
I did not pay anything to have them unlocked and never have. They were unlocked when they arrived0 -

You could have been turned down due to something as trivial as your address not matching. It may be simply be a mismatch between the address you supplied and the one the agency has on file for you.
I recently tried to make a purchase on the Littlewoods website and was turned down due to an address mismatch. On contacting Equifax, I was informed that all details were indeed as I had supplied for the online transaction!.....BUT Equifax have switched the second line of my address with the third and that's where the whole trouble lay!
Their solution?
"Please try to place an order over the telephone and ask the sales person to enter the address as we have it in our records."!!! :mad:0 -

I was going to post same as you ^^ I used to work for o2 and still have mates there and they dont lock all handsets. XDA is locked as it exclusive to o2.Man who stands on toilet is high on pot. - Old chinese proverb.0 -
Hi
Just an update on this, got my phone today, from one stop phone shop, even though they said i was denied, which is really annoying as that stopped my e2save phone going through.
I returned have returned the osps, how will i no when im no longer on any1s system, and alright to order again?
The phone and service from OSPS was a joke, wrong battery, no cashback cheques, no welcome pack, and the customer service was crap.
i have had no problems with e2save b4, tho same company0
