You obviously know naff all about cycling then ? If you buy a cheap bike, you'll find it heavy, it will break easily, it will cost more to repair, and will probably demotivate the person riding easily. Buy a decent bike and most of the problems go away, and the fact you have paid decent money for a bike motivates people. If you pay £100 for a bike you will leave it in a shed, if you pay £500 for a bike you will be less likley to give up IMO.
You're talking out of your behind I'm afraid. I wouldnt recomend buying a bike for £100 but I only paid £220 (reduced from £370) for my bike which I use for commuting and it weighs just over 10kg. I have done nearly 3000 miles on it and the only thing I have replaced is the bottom bracket, tyres and brake blocks. I'd say its got plenty left in it too.
I know plenty of cycling nuts who come to work on very cheap "hack" bikes worth only a couple of hundred quid because they dont want to ruin their good bikes.
The good thing about cheap bikes is that you dont care when you're riding on gritted roads in winter or when it is left outside work getting rained on all day. There is also less chance of having things like your wheels stolen as they won't be made of high end components.0
