A bike is more of an investment these days, and if you buy right you will get your money back on it when selling and the maintenance will only be wear & tear, which if you're serious about commuting 50miles per week, will be well worth it.

I'd consider upping your budget & doing it properly.

This one is a fantastic buy. Origionally £600 (pinch of salt), but very well spec'd with full Deore set up and good wheels/tyres/light frame etc.

Not a highstreet name, but well respected in the biking fraternities!

I can highly recommend Decathlon. We've had numerous bikes from them over the years and they are of a very high quality but at budget prices. They do mountain bikes, racers, hybrids, town bikes and everything inbetween. They also do loads of accessories which are very cheap.

Have a look at their website and find one near you, it will definitely be worth the trip.

I dont think they even have one in Wales, let alone near me :)

I can tell that's well made from the frame geometry, I don't even need to look at the spec's.

Worth remembering when im looking for a commuter in the next few months (office move)..... There's no way i'd use my "Kona Kikapu" for work travel, it'd get nicked by the same I sat down at my desk.....

I don't understand this mentality that all MTB's get nicked? If you're sensible about where you leave it and don't scrimp on the lock you'll be fine. Granted a full-suss bike worth almost a bag of sand brand new would be appealing to any tea leaf, but you can still lock it up securely in the work building couldn't you?

Not sure where the cockney came from :rotfl:

  • I can leave it in work in one of the storage rooms (a bomb proof bunker downstairs lol) so security wont be an issue. I just wanted something that would do the job. It doesnt have to be flash, just get me from A to B.

have you considered asking your employer to participate in the 'cycle to work scheme'? , i got mine this way , got a lot more for my money , in fact the very nice man in halfords allowed me to get two adult bikes , a kids bike , cycle carrier for the car , lights, locks helmets and everything . The cost was deducted monthly from my salary before tax , a very useful initiative from the government . Ask your employer to sign up .

I work for a charity funded organisation so would that affect the scheme?

Im sure I read somewhere that charities etc couldnt participate..
  • Decathlon seems to be the best bet for cheap bikes right now. I know a few "serious" cyclists who have Decathlon bikes as back-ups or winter bikes. For £100 you won't find better than this one

It's the fact that most bike nicking scrotes will look at a rigid framed bike and think it's not worth nicking. If it's full sus and/or looks flashy, it'll be a target.

You could put a £150 Halfrauds special full suspension bike next to a £2500 hard tail (Like a Cannondale, Specialized, Kona, Orange, etc etc) and the cheap bike would disappear first.
