chiminea
i'm thinking of getting one of these for my patio.
nothing flash, just one that looks nice and gives out a decent amount of heat.
i have read reviews and thay say you have to cure them before use. is this a complicated thing to do?
and can you burn a small amount os coal in them or just wood?

Madlyn, I was just about to ask the same questions, plus chiminea or fire pit?0

I have a chimnea and all I did was have a small fire in it as I wanted. Did leave it out all winter so do have rusty screws to clean this summer hmmmmmmmm0

The cure is easy. Burn a newspaper inside and leave to cool for a day. Then use as you like!
The soot produced seals the clay inside, meaning no moisture gets trapped, meaning no cracks when you use it.0 -
Thanks, I'm glad I spotted this as I saw a wee clay one in Sainsbury's today for £29.99
Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
I would definately buy a clay one rather than a cast iron one.
The first chiminea we had was clay and we loved it.We leant it to a neighbour and they broke it.We were devastated so replaced it with the cast iron one.We use ours all year round, bonfire night etc so it's always out and I couldn't stand looking at it any longer so last week we went to B&Q and bought their large clay one and we are so pleased with it I just think they clay ones give a much nicer effect.0 -
after having looked around abit more. i'm being drawn to a fire pit instead.
but argos do have what seems to be a nice chiminea at a good price.

Got a cast iron one from Argos and it's immense. Sits on the patio and gets used a few times a week in Summer!0

I love mine! Bought it last year for £23 in a sale. It's a small clay one with a stand. You will need a bit of very fine sand in the bottom. I don't use it for warmth per se, but I burn all paperwork in it, so no need for a shredder (sold mine for £4 at car boot). It's magic - get one if you can, I can highly recommend it.Call me what you like, I was a bit "tiddly" when I chose my username
April GC: £64.27/£1000
