Yes thanks for the above. It is something I will never ever 'assume' again! Will be paranoid for evermore, and alot poorer due to the extortionate premiums I will have to pay for a genuine oversight! Ok, a fine yes, I 'commited' the offence! But a dual punishment for the 'crime'!!!

the punishment isnt hard enough for drivers who drive uninsured, use the comparison sites to get a cheaper quote, ok so the premium will be higher but you can still shop round, cost of my renewal had gone up by £80 but possibly more as something else was changed at smae time i told my past insurer about my points i was recently given,

yes its a pain for something that with hind sight could have been avoided but you learn from your mistakes

    Certainly am.
Even more reason to scrap it.

It would be far better if everyone knew they had to renew, and did it themselves.
This is a company that sent out a pseudo auto renew, and further messed someone up.

auto renewal should stay, people need to take responsibility for they're actions, tell em whats wrong with writing down the dates when insurance is due to run out and/or when its got a month left so as a reminder to look for quotes
  • I have some sympathy for the OP, but still, its your responsibility, and I can't imagine not knowing exactly whats happening with any of my finacical services. I know almost to the penny what should be in my account, and go scouting around to look for problems if there are discrepancies

  • I have no sympathy. I actually find it almost impossible to believe that the OP ignored all the renewal notices from his insurers, all the warning and last minute flyers they will have sent, the reminders and emails they will have sent if a payment failed, the fact that her card or bank account was not debited (this is the biggie !), the impossibility not to notice that everyone is using cashback sites and comparison sites and she hadn't done so this time etc.

Most folk notice that hundreds or thousands of pounds which they had saved up and earmarked for the annual car insurance was not taken from their credit card. I'd send the OP for an eye test before letting her get back in the driving seat.

Would be interesting to know the OP's insurers as, in my personal (if limited) experience, most now seem to have auto-renew as the default option which you have to indicate you OPT OUT of.

As others have said, there are no grounds for appeal as it is your responsibility when using your vehicle on the road to ensure that it is insured. However, I think plod may have had some sympathy in that they were perfectly entitled to seize your car and make you walk home. That would have cost you even more in recovery and storage fees. Learn the lesson and move on.

I don't think the OP was looking for sympathy. She wanted some advice.

Did you not think it strange you hadn't received any docuements from them? Even people out there who just stick thier 'unread' documents away in a file somewhere seem to play merry hell if they haven't received thier Certificate of Motor Insurane within 2 nano seconds of renewal. Hard lesson to learn, but it's in these cases that auto renewal does acutally work.

    [QUOTE
For your information, I do check my bank statements, but not with a fine tooth comb! The payments were made over a ten month period hence ending in October last year! I have the memory of a sieve at times, with running a house, bringing up children and working! So apologies for not being on the ball! [/QUOTE]

An awful lot of the people on here run a house, bring up a family, work full time (some are also single parents so doing it all on their own) - but they manage to ensure that they keep their vehicles insured.

O.K. you "made an error" - swallow the penalty and move on - just be grateful that in the UK this doesn't carry a mandatory suspension otherwise you would also be having to organise your life around public transport!
