Is it actually possible to have used this much gas?

Hello, I have recieved an npower bill today, we have been paying £50 a month dd for both gas and electricity so I knew we would owe them some but we owe them £763.87!! This is from September when we changed to them to now.

We have an electric fire in living room and an electric cooker, so gas is only for hot water and heating.

Actuall reading on 28/09/2010 was 9946
Actual reading on 15/03/2011 was 490
(it gets to 9999 and then starts again I'm assuming)

It then says GAS USED 28/09/2010 - 03/01/2011 273 = 8625kwh
GAS USED 03/01/2011 - 15/03/2011 271 = 8540kwh

Total gas charges this period £673.34

I had the heating on when it was cold obv as i have two small children but it still seems rather high!

Can anyone help? What is normal amount of units or kwh used for a semi detched 3 bedroom house?

do you have a metric M3 or imperial meter?

I used 18,000 kWh of gas in the past year

20,000 Kwh a year for gas is an average for the UK.
It was a very cold winter, factors such as insulation, the temperature you run your heating at, and the length of time its on will all affect what you are using.
If you heat your water and cook with gas it all adds up.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Seems correct - you have used 544 Imperial gas units which is the 17,265kWh for which you have been charged.

The problem with NPower is you are charged for far more expensive Tier 1 units in winter.

Thanks, an average is what I was looking for. I would think we would use more than average as I am at home all day with 2 small children so during this past cold winter the heating was always on. I don't think the insulation is up to much either!

we have just had the same issue. Npower charge loads of high rate units during winter which has made bills rocket this year. They now want an extra £40 per month from us, making our monthly payments £154 per month.

You are higher than average but what shocks me most is that I would have paid £441 for that amount

The OP's bill was for gas and electricity and we haven't had a breakdown of gas alone!
