Argos Clearance Warranty Warning !

Options
I bought an MSI Wind U130 Netbook last September.
Shortly afterwards I installed a RAM upgrade chip to improve the speed of the machine.
I checked with the manufacturer (MSI) about the upgrade as you have to break the warranty seal to get into the machine. They said that it was fine to upgrade the RAM as long as no other damage was done and it would not invalidate the Warranty.
Everything was fine with it and I was very pleased with the netbook.
Last week a fault occurred with the display.
With Argos clearance laptop returns are with d&j Henry. When I phoned them to arrange a repair I asked them if I should remove the extra Ram chip before I sent it back, and they said as I had broken the warranty label the warranty was now invalid! They would not budge even though I told them the manufacturer had OK'd the upgrade.
I phoned argos clearance about it and they said the warranty was voided also.
So buyer beware don't open the back to upgrade or the warranty is voided.

    Why not contact MSI?

Well that,s a funny thing. On the MSI website when you try to email them a red box appears saying all warranty issues with Argos are to be taken up with Argos !
    Hand washing methinks ?

So why did you contact them about the warranty when putting the RAM in instead of contacting Argos?

As MSI told you the warranty is fine, I would pursue it with them.

    Maybe ignore the warranty.
The warranty is in addition to your statutory rights.
Use the Sale of Goods Act instead.

Are you still within six months of purchase?
Makes it slightly easier if you are.

Sods law its just outside the six months.
I have emailed trading standards and sent a begging email to MSI to get a replacement sticker.

I still feel a loss coming on though :)

    Hi,

The links at the top of the page rotate, so just in case it isn't there at the time you look, the link referred to is this one:-

Consumer Rights: "Give me my money back!"

All the MSE Article links are listed early in the ReadMe sticky - should you need them. :)

Phone Argos head office and ask to speak to a manager, the customer service people have very little powers.

Other than that I would remove the extra ram and if possible completely remove the sticker, then take it into Argos and keep stum about the memory upgrade.

    Or
We asked MSI UK about this and was told that owners would just need to register the product before going ahead with the upgrade - all will remain good. However after much poking MSI for answers it seems that the "register with MSI" option is exclusive to UK customers. For once it seems those of us in Blighty have a better deal! Excuse me while I promptly fall off my chair.

The warranty is with the supplier, NOT the manufacturer.
    You broke the seal.
Doesn't matter who said it was OK - Fred down the pub ?
You have modified the item - it is no longer what Argos supplied you with.
The supplier is quite within his rights to say the warranty no longer applies.

The Warranty is with the Manufacturer, Not with the Supplier. No company has to supply any warranty, a warranty is above your statutory rights.
    However.
If you have modified the item and it is found that the modification had NOTHING to do with the fault then Argos will have to provide you with either a Repair, Replacement or a Full or Partial Refund depending on use.
