The Warranty is with the Manufacturer, Not with the Supplier. No company has to supply any warranty, a warranty is above your statutory rights.
    However.
If you have modified the item and it is found that the modification had NOTHING to do with the fault then Argos will have to provide you with either a Repair, Replacement or a Full or Partial Refund depending on use.

Just to muddy the waters :)

I have found out that modifying either the RAM or HDD on a laptop or PC is allowed under European law.

Do I want to go to the Hague ?

But if you had got a I.T. engineer to fit your ram, no rules were broken as they are qualified. so what was the name of the engineer you used?
    GNU
    Terry Pratchett

Sticking in ram should only invalidate the warranty if that caused the issue..

I seem to remember seeing that not allowing the breaking of those seals to gain access to a user serviceable part / upgrade is an unfair contract term under EU law but I cannot find any information to back it up. Have TS got back you ?

    You broke the seal.
Doesn't matter who said it was OK - Fred down the pub ?
You have modified the item - it is no longer what Argos supplied you with.
The supplier is quite within his rights to say the warranty no longer applies.

If you bought a used car from a dealer and swapped the cassette player for a CD player would you expect the dealer to refuse to do anything about unrelated faults, such as the brakes failing?

Oh, for arguments sake, the dealer put a sticker on the cassette player saying the warranty was void for the whole car if you removed the cassette player.
