Maybe one for the Arms rather than here, but what is wrong with Malta? A place that I am planning to visit one day, if I get the chance. Is it true that the money there is still the old pounds, shillings and pennies?

    Hi voyager2002,

Malta is unfortunately now in the Euro-zone (and the prices hiked accordingly :( )

It's as Murphy_the_cat says it's a 'marmite' destination, if you like beach holidays it's probably not for you as there is only one 'true' sandy beach on the whole island but there is lots to see here, particularly to do with the Knights of St. John and WWII. The people are friendly, they have a close affinity to Britian (being the only island holder of the George Cross) and English is spoken everywhere.
There are some really good deals atm especially if you google as lots of hotels seem to be upgrading or joining together to become 'holiday clubs' and are doing the 'visit us' promotions. I've seen ads for £69 for a week plus flights (and as I've said flights in July are currently going for £40 each way plus tax) so it's a cheap break.

As I said in my previous post, each to their own:)

    Hi voyager2002,

It's as Murphy_the_cat says it's a 'marmite' destination, The people are friendly, agreed

they have a close affinity to Britian agreed (perfect if you like "english" pbs, bacon & eggs, Sunday roast etc, etc ) (being the only island holder of the George Cross richly deserved) and English is spoken everywhere.

I've seen ads for £69 for a week plus flights (you'd need to PAY me an awfuil lot more than that to return to M****) (and as I've said flights in July are currently going for £40 each way plus tax) so it's a cheap break.

As I said in my previous post, each to their own (agreed):)

On the plus side, my holiday to M**** did ensure one thing for me. Mrs Cat agreed whilst we were over there that in the future, if we were ever looking at a holiday from a where can we go for X number of ££sss rather than going somewhere where we WANTED to go to, we'd rather stay at home -- such was the scar that our holiday to M**** left on our souls :rotfl::rotfl:

But I will happily admit that some people love holidaying there (saying that, some people think that nailing their testes to a window frame is a pleasureable thing to do as well )

Sadly, a flight from Benin (where I am now) would cost a good deal more than forty pounds. For some reason, what used to be the cheapest airline home (Afriqiyah) has stopped flying. I never did get that relaxing stopover in Tripoli.

no longer - they are now in euroland.

I's love to tell you what is wrong with Malta, but i'd live in permanent fear of blue rinsed, tartan handbag wielding, ankle slipper wearing, pipe smoking, Tom Jones kareoke singing, tea spoon collecting vigilante lovers of M**** tracking me down and telling me how good M**** is, whilst they drink their half pints of mild and/or rum and peppermint.

I think you have the right idea though -- visit for one day then get away from their sharpish :D

I Think your getting mixed up with the "P" word - Puerto Pollenca:eek:
  • Malta's proximity to Libya probably has something to do with the sudden price drop

Well, it's good to know what you think of me!:p
You're actually wrong on all counts:rotfl: I think Tom Jones is atrocious, don't collect anything (except dust!!!) hate kareoke with a passion (and tartan), don't own slippers of any description and definately don't have a blue rinse. Oh and I drink cider and baileys or rum and coke if you're asking but not necessarily together:beer:
My husband, on the other hand, does wear slippers and his drink of choice is rum and pep so I have to give you that;)

Out of curiosity (if this isn't drifting the thread too far) just what happened in Malta to make your holiday so bad?

Oh, there is one bad thing about malta - time share touts:mad:

When you went back in to check the price did you search for 1 person. There may have only been 4 seats at the lower fare (or possibly only 1) so when you search for more than 4 then it quotes them all at the next fare rather than 4 x £100 + 2 x £198. If you search again for 6 people what fare does it show
This seems the most likely explanation to me. It would mean that you couldn't necessarily have got all your flights for £700, so hopefully you are not as out of pocket as you think. You could have booked all the flights as individual transactions, and got a few at the lower price, but each time you tried to purchase another flight you ran the risk of finding te price had risen or of not managing to book your whole party on the same flight, as they could sell out before you booked everyone's flight - always the risk when trying to book for a big group in separate transactions.

I did put in the whole party because I know that prices displayed can be different depending on the party number, that's why I was so mad!
Oh, and I did it more than once cos I couldn't believe my eyes!
