with Junior !

Going on from HappyEnough's thread, I went to see Junior's teachers on friday as I was concerned about one of the grades he got in one of his A2 modules but asked if they wouldn't let Junior know I was going (didn't want any damage limitation exercises to be carried out!)

Had a really good chat with them and asked them to let Junior know in his review meeting today that I'd been and that we'd be in weekly contact until his exams.

Well he came home and I was expecting fur to fly - but no...he's gone up stairs and has already done an hours work in fairness to him.Bu ttalk abou the cold shoulder - am only getting one word answers.

I know I've done the right thing but if anyone's freezer is on the blink they can come to our house because at the moment it's warmer in the south pole!

Ah the joys of parenthood eh!

I don't think you have. Why did you not speak to him, and then to him with his teacher if you were concerned? This could have seriously backfired on you.

If my parents had gone into college/school asking about my grades before they asked me, I would have disowned them and/or moved out on the spot. Talk about lack of trust.

I have - I tried the let's have an adult conversation method and the raging banshee of a mum conversation method of how 8 weeks hard work now will pay off later on but nothing seemed to have changed and the results confirmed it .......if he had got better grades in the exam it wouldn't have occured to me to have the conversation with his teacher.

I have spoken to him about how school is going but got the impression that I was being fobbed off and it turns out that my suspicions were correct........as his teacher said if he was any more laid back he'd be horizontal.

Strangely enough my parents did the same thing with me when I was his age and it did give me the kick up the bum that I needed....hopefully it will with him as well.

I wish my mum had. She was too busy at work or getting wasted to really notice one way or the other.

I think the OP has done the right thing and don't see why she's getting a pasting (assuming the OP is a she!) as the boy is actually doing his work now and knows he won't get away with anymore shirking!

Thanks Delain - I really do have his best interests at heart although it probably doesn't seem like it at the moment!

He knows I mean business...I think what has scared him is that i've not said a word about going to see his teacher ...and I think I'm more scary when I don't shout!

After his exams he can stay in bed all summer if he wants but for the next 8 weeks, its bootcamp time for him!

As a teacher...I applaud what you have done, too many parents willing to wash their hands of their child's education in sixth form.

As a parent...I feel the pain of your deep freeze experience, but you are his parent not his buddy, and you are there to guide him as you see fit, so well done.

This as someone whose Mum booted her out of the family home when the A level results dropped on the mat:o

just had the same situation with my son but had the talk with him and his teachers at parents evening last week, luckily we didnt have to take it any further, he knows now what he has to do.

mountainofdebt- if you tried everything else then i think you did the right thing, with teenagers its like banging your head against a brick wall sometimes and they think they know it all

    Hi all,

Had this with my DD 2 years ago.

Tried everything from bribery to threats of no going anywhere anytime...got us nowhere.

Went to teachers, we agreed what was needed...but she WOULD NOT do the work...CBA was her middle name.

Then at A2 results came in...ohh err "Mum, what do I do, I've got 2 Unclassifieds, I've failed them"

Light bulb moment for her, now she's at Uni and doing well, with a part-time job to help with monies, she is a happy bunny.

At 18 I certainly don't think you should be going behind his back to the teacher. I do think you have to carry on encouraging, but he is an adult or virtually.
