  • I've been having the same messages for the last 5 months ( in fact since I was out of contract) saying I am nearing my usage limit of 10GB, each time getting nearer to the limit although not over yet! Once was when I had been on holiday and everything was switched off. I have anytime calls with BT and want to keep my telephone number. Also need a service which is not interrupted. I was with Talktalk before but was constantly being cut off -annoying when downloading something. Can anyone recommend a new provider?

Incidentally HH3 locked onto IP 50.7.128.234, if that is a useful clue.

    Cheers, terrybdmn

IP address is numbered 50.7.128.234. This IP address is registered in United States, and active in Chicago, Illinois. IP Country code is US. ISP of this address is "FDCservers.net", organization is "FDCservers.net". IP address latitude is 41.877602 and longitude is -87.627197. Postal code of this IP is 60604 and area code is 312.

The map places this IP at the DePaul University Loop Campus

No idea whether this can be relied upon but several google search results provide similar information using:

    who is 50.7.128.234

    as the search request.

Perhaps some techies can elaborate if you have no connection with the University.

I've just signed up to Infinity and the last few days of November were OK.

I checked my BT usage this morning (2nd Dec) and it shows 17.59GB used - in one day! My DU Meter shows 6.87 GB which includes local area network (LAN) activity too!

If I'd really used 17.59 GB I would have noticed this on the DU meter graph.

Just got on to BT - they're telling me the meter readings are 48 hours out of date, so on 2nd Dec they are still showing November's usage.
  • I have been with BT Infinity Option 1 for 14 months and my normal usage is about 24 Gb. I was shocked to find when I checked my usage on 8 January to find that I had (allegedly) used 53.63Gb in the first 7 days of the month. I had checked only a day or two before that and the usage was in single figures. There is no way that I have downloaded that much data, as my computer is quite old and only has an 80Gb hard drive which is about 75% full. I have a small tablet and my son has a 16Gb iPad, neither of which could have downloaded such an amount of data. I submitted a complaint to BT, but they have said that the meter is correct. They suggested, however, that I change the wireless key, which I did with the help of their Technical Team. They have said that they will check my usage for the next month. I am not confident that I will get any joy from BT. I have been a telephone customer for almost 35 years and a BT Internet customer for 15 - so much for loyalty.

So last Sunday according to the BT usage monitor I used over 20Gb. Nonsense. I barely used to breach 10Gb in a month but now I have had two e-mails already this month to say I am likely to go North of 40Gb.

For the past week I have been tracking my usage using the Homehub Stats. Last night at 11:30pm it showed that I had used less than 1Gb in the previous 24hours. This morning the Bt Usage Monitor claimed that I had used more than 5Gb in the last twenty four hours - IMPOSSIBLE - my son did not arrive home until after 1am!

I see from this and other threads/forums/websites that I am far from alone in having this problem with BT. Can someone advise the most painless way to get a satisfactory resolution please.

Switch to Plusnet. I think their unlimited costs less that the limited BT product. Don't forget to use a cashback site - should more than cover the excess use charge.

Following on from my recent post, yesterday BT says I used 22Gb but the Homehub3 Stats at 11:30pm last night suggested less that 2Gb. Why is this happening to me? I am waiting for a response for the BT Helpdesk.

Just moved into a new flat and had BT Infinity installed. We've been here for 8 days now and the usage monitor reckons we've used 24GB in that time! I know what I've used the broadband for and the 24GB figure is frankly preposterous. The only thing BT recommend is to either download a usage monitor for the PC (which I have done but isnt great as it includes media server streaming over LAN) or to change the wireless key. I periodically check the attached devices and know there's no one else piggy backing onto our wireless. HH5 reckoned we used 3.5GB over a 4 day period whilst BT reckoned use over the same period was 14 or 15GB or so. Since installing a usage monitor on my PC a day ago it reckons I've used 500MB, but I bet BT come back with some atrocious usage figure again.

BT also advised me last night that they won't charge for any excess use in the first month but I'm waiting for them to confirm if that's the case or not. Ultimately I'll probably have to upgrade to an unlimited package which will mean losing the benefits of the discounted line rental for the first 6 months and obviously paying more. The BT forum has a 56 page thread on the same issue, but BT seemingly deny they have any issue whatsoever!

  • Piggeh, don't get despondent. BT may be a monolithic organisation but like all behemoths they can be worn down in the end! Make a formal complaint through the BT representative who has posted previously on this thread. Within a day or two you will get a phone call to talk about the problem. They suggested to me that I change my wireless key. I did this and also unsubscribed from BT FON at the same time. For the next couple of days the HomeHub3 numbers still did not match the BT Usage figure but then something mysterious happened. My HH3 now shows that it was reset at 3am in the morning two days ago. For the last two days my BT Usage has matched my HH3 stats. Curious - particularly as I was asleep when the HH3 declares that it was reset!

I am awaiting a follow up call from BT in the next couple of days and I hope by then that for now at least the absurd BT Usage declarations will be history for me. Oh yes, and they have instructed BT Billing to cancel the additional charges!
