Here are some HD Samples. Use them to test your system. Should be ok with 720p. Use something like Media Player Classic Portable to play the FULL HD content(1080p).0

I can play 1080p vids on my dual core athlon 1.2ghz and radeon 3200, your i3 and intel graphics should be more than up to the job. Deffo a software issue here, try fiddling with vlc player.0

I watched the Avatar trailer on YouTube, 720p looked fine and 1080p was okay but not perfectly smooth I'd say.
What can I do though as the iPlayer software comes as it comes, I don't think I can change settings on that.
I looked up vlc player, that's an open source player but does it work with iPlayer? (I wouldn't think it does)0 -
You won't be able to play the iplayer downloaded file with VLC or any player other than the iPlayer desktop. The reason for this is that the downloaded file is encrypted,
Unless you have a lot of other applications running at the same time it is unlikely that it is lack of RAM causing the perfromace problem. If you run up task manager whilst playing the video I suspect you'll see the iPlayer app hititing high cpu utilisation.
I'm not awae of any configuration changes you can make to improve the performance of the iPlayer desktop app. There is a way to download an unencrypted copy of iplayer media using get_iplayer (use google) which can then be played using WMP or VLC.0
