Are you comparing like-with-like? are you streaming a Youtube HD clip, and an iPlayer HD clip?

If iplayer HD streaming media is stuttery and the youtube HD media is not, then that's due either to poor code design in the iPlayer plugin, or to an inferior internet connection to the BBC website.

Some ISPs employ "traffic shaping" or "throttling" at certain times of the day, and because iPlayer uses a lot of bandwidth, they could be targetting it. Do you have the same problem at off-peak times? Worth running a broadband speed checker to see what your actual d/l speed is at times you are having problems.

He has said (and it was repeated already) that he is playing a downloaded video. The quality or otherwise of his internet connection is irrelevant.

My money is on the onboard graphics not being up to the job. That said I found the player you have to use forthe downloads was terrible some time back so I gave up on it - but that was on a netbook which has a tad less grunt than an i3.

He has not got a problem with streaming he has downloaded the program and is watching from disk.
Mark check your power settings, make sure you are using the high performance settings, not balanced. My 3 yr old Asus core2 duo works fine (with a radeon mobile chip in it).

Edited , sorry kwik went for a toilet break whilst your post arrived.

I agree with the above. If your machine is set to 'Power Saver' or 'Balanced' then it is a likely participant to the 'jerkiness' you are experiencing.

Thanks. I changed the power settings from "Balanced" to "High Performance" and put a shortcut on my desktop so I can flick between them. At a quick look at a streamed iPlayer HD programme is looks very watchable now, but I will try it out later with a full download through my 32" TV to see how that looks. Hopefully it is sorted now, as I could not understand why my Acer P6100 and i3 laptops could not cope but my HP T4300 could. The RAM was the only difference so I wondered if it was that.

I connected the laptop to my 32" TV and iPlayer HD is watchable, although when there is movement in the picture it loses frames and after watching it a while it makes my eyes hurt a bit! Perhaps my laptop is just not up to it. Would upgrading the RAM help at all or should I admit defeat? To other people with i3 3GB laptops manage to watch iPlayer HD okay?
