I wondered if other peeps keep a set number of outfits for their kids?

My 7yo DD seems to have loadsa clothes and I wondered how other peeps deal with their kids 'wardrobes'...?

Do you buy a certain number of new outfits so many times a year?

Do you buy stuff as you see it but get rid of the same number of items as you've bought by giving it away to a friend, taking it to the charity shop, selling them on Ebay, etc?

Do you only get rid of stuff when they've definitely grown out of it or worn it out?

I would be very grateful for anything anyone wants to say about this ;)

I buy stuff as they need it, or if I see something I like

  • Per child I buy approximately four outfits per season twice a year (ie winter and summer).

Then I might buy a few cheap tops to take us through the school holidays as I can't always turn them around in the wash quick enough when they are wearing them all the time.

When mine were at home full time, I would make sure I had seven outfits so I didn't feel the pressure if I didn't get to sort the washing in time. Often the weekends were the only time I was able to get round to it.

I buy enough cheap stuff to last a week as I only wash their clothes once a week. They tend to wear jogging bottoms and t-shirts around the house and for playing out in.

Then then have a couple of tidy outfits for going out out places.

I tend to buy things as they grow out of things, or if I see a good bargain or spot something I really like.
Here I go again on my own....

Our son is only 2 but everytime he is getting close to outgrowing his clothes we go out and do a big clothes shop. We usually get at least 5 pairs of trousers, a pair of dungarees, 10 tops, a pack of vests. He's getting close to needing the next size up now. We'll go and get some aditional shorts and summer tops in a month or two.

I do get a few bits to save if they are on sale, or if we need a one off specific outfit eg for a wedding.

I am the same with buying myself clothes too, do a big shop every so often.

Quite often I either don't like the current style or can't find it to fit. I tend to stock up on things like jeans when I find them cheap enough and the right style, so generally she has more than one of the same item. Generally the girl has enough clothes for four or five days/outfits. Right now she has two identical pairs of jeans, three pairs of tracksuit bottoms, and assorted tops and cardies to go with them. That will do her a week of school holidays. With mine, she definitely outgrows rather than wears out, apart from school shoes.

My dd is only 4 so needs more clothes than kids in school uniform. I buy tips and trousers that can be mixed rather than outfits. At the mo she has 4/5 pairs of trousers and about 10 tops. Most are hand me downs, charity shop finds or h&m trews for her skinny bum! I buy stuff in cs as I see it then the rest as she grows out of it. Old stuff gets passed on sent (back) to thecharity shop.

My ds has 3 lots of school jumpers and trews but 5 shirts. He has 3 pairs of jeans and endless hoodies but his dad always buys him label ones as presents

A few years ago I decided on a 'max amount' as at that time we had limited storage space in my DDs room. So I decided on 10 pairs of pants and socks. 5 bottoms (skirts/trousers) 8 tops (that co-ordinated with the bottoms) 1 cardi/fleece top, 3-4 sets of PJs, 1 'party dress', 1 swimming costume, 2-3 shorts plus school uniform which I always have 5 of.

She has more storage space now, so I am not as strict as I was then. Twice a year as the weather turns (usually around April/May and late Sept/Oct) I go thru the last seasons stuff eg t-shirts, shorts, jumpers. I get rid of anything that is not going to fit her next season. Anything that is quite big and will fit next time winter/summer rolls round goes in the top of my wardrobe.
  • I just usually go and buy a big lot of clothes when they start growing out of things, I also sometimes buy little bits off ebay, but other than that I rarely buy clothes for them when I'm out unless it's something in the sale or something that is needed.

I have 2 boys aged 6 and 2, they have about 15 to 20 tshirts each, the baby has about 6 pairs of trousers, my eldest has 2 as he has literally overnight grown a few inches so all his jeans and trousers are like ankle swingers! they both have 3 or cardigans each that are matching but I have only matched them once! :rotfl: and a couple of hoodys.
They also have the same trainers, just plain white Fila ones that cost a tenner each.

I done a spring clean at the weekend and sorted all our clothes out, washed, dried, put away, thrown out or donated. Before that I would of had no idea what they had!

My children have around 4 summer outfits and 4 winter outfits. That is the same amount as I have. School uniforms are seperate to this [they have 2 or 3 of each item]. I usually end up buying a couple of outfits per season for them as they tend not to grow too fast.
Washing isn't a problem as I do it every day, then iron and put away so we always have something clean to put on.
