  • If you are writing to Europcar, also mention the Data Protection act and that they acted unlawfully by passing your details on.

Do they charge a fee for forwarding the fine??
I've been thinking about this, take car back from customer, deliberately go get a fine issued on the car, charge customer a forwarding fee..... Could be a nice little earner that.

The OP probably agreed to his details being passed on in this situation when he started the hire.

He probably also agreed to pay an admin fee for penalty charge notices and fixed penalty notices and other fines. However, this would almost certainly exclude private parking invoices.

It doesn't say the details were passed on anyway.

The effort in manpower to do that would be greater than the reward. Take the car somewhere, leave it for long enough on the off chance of getting a fine, bring it back - all costs money.

Well, the OP did tell us...
Last week I recvd an invoice from Eurocar for just under £40 admin along with a note saying as I got a parking ticket at 13.34 on my last days rental and they would pass on my details to NCP for them to chase their £100 charge.

I've heard of HP companies doing it, in particular Jaguar finance, so normal car hire companies probably do as well...

More likely someone at the hire place needed to go into town for something. Parked illegally, got a ticket, wasn't supposed to be using the car for personal use so decided to blame the ticket on the OP. Then concocted a story about the car being returned late to ensure everything made sense and they didn't get into trouble.

The answer will lie in the paperwork. Demand to see the documents relating to the return of the car. The employee might not have been clever enough to fake them all.
