Young Drivers' Car Insurance Discussion

Anyway, I am a 23 year old male looking for car insurance.

I have my driving test next Wednesday and I fully expect to pass so I am doing "mock" insurance quotes as if I have passed my test, using a 1.0 Vauxhall Corsa as the car (as thats what I am likely to buy)

I can't seem to find anything under £2,200 no matter what I try and that is with limited milage (5k) and my step dad on as a named driver.

I have no criminal convictions and I live in a very nice part of Manchester (although, I understand that it is still an "urban area" which is likely to be why the quotes are sky high)

I just wondered if anyone on here could advise me of anything I can do to bring the premiums down? I am an unemployed, disabled student living away from home. Also, I am an active musician and I perform regularly (the sole reason for getting a car) which has left me confused on the milage front. I'd like to think 5k will be enough but I suspect I am being a tad naive with that.

Do the "pay as you drive" policies really present real savings? I also want to pay the full cost of the insurance up front as opposed to paying monthly. For that to happen it needs to be below £2,000 really

Any help and advice will be greatly appreciated, I'm tearing hairs out here. Makes me wonder why I even bothered learning in the first place
  • have you been putting the fact that you're a musician/performer into these quotes? I think certain professions are seen as higher risk and that's one of them unfortunately.
  • I tried to get a quote for the co-op young driver policy the other day only to be told that they refuse to give me a quote as the number of passengers I have in my car is "unacceptable". I understand they are trying to keep premiums down but I find this insulting. I am a mother of 3 with a husband, how can it be unacceptable to be driving them around in our family car?! It makes me so mad! Unfortunately I fall into the young driver category (will be 24 this march) but none of the young driver policies seem to be suitable. Does anyone know what I can do to stop being ripped off? I've done my pass plus, I have 2 years ncb (the length of time I've been driving for), everything else seems to be fairly straight forward. I just cant seem to get the premium below £1300 annually (which we cant do sadly) or £1900 monthly.

    Try Diamond :) I'm a girl and have a 98' Ford KA.
I passed my test last year, aged 19. Got 10 months insurance (1 years no claims though) for £1200.

Looking for my renewal for March and they have quoted me £768 for 12 months, with 1 years no claims, fully comp again.

I have my step dad on the policy as an additional/second driver but me as named policy holder of course.

    Hope this helps.

  • thanks nicole.17 but for some reason they are quoting me the same price as they did for the year just gone :0/ it seems to be that no matter what I do it just wont go down! same car, no accidents/convictions, ncb's, same address, same premium.

I feel sorry for all the young people in this thread (im 18 too) and ive had a right carry on to get a reasonable priced insurance deal. Im currently paying £2300 a year for my 1.2 punto. Thank god i could afford to pay it in one lump sum as it would have been £3100 monthly.

I think one of the best things to do is actually call these people. Its amazing how talking to a real person instead of tapping into a keyboard can get you extra money off or in my case the guy on the phone actually suggested i add my dad to the policy as well as my mum to see if it could get it down any more.

If you do manage to get yourself insured then just remember that it wont be long before your insurance will go down if your a good sensible driver. Ive been doing some quotes for next year with 1 years no claims and im getting about £1300 for my punto so saving a grand is fantastic. If i take it out on multicar like i did this year i may even get it below that!

    Will
  • I'm 23 years old with 2 years NCD, I've had to add my mum onto my policy as a Named Driver to bring it down, I pay £1,100 per year for a 1.6 Focus, without my mum they want £1,600+

If you want a tip add 1 or both of your parents as named drivers
  • I've had a quick search on this - is there a way to work out which car is the cheapest for a 17 or 18 year old (having passed their test) to drive/be insured on?

Google for insurance groups and look for the lowest groups, then put through quotes on GoCompare and similar.

Generally however, the cheaper cars to insure are new models (statistically, boy racers are less likely to be able to afford them, so they are crashed less).

So you might find that 'cheapest car to insure' is not terribly helpful - I found that the cheapest insurance premiums were all to be found on cars that were less than 5 years old, and therefore more expensive to buy anyway.

I've been looking for insurance for my son who's just 18. He's in the army and will be taking his test in the next 6mths.
Putting different variables into the comparison sites a 1l corsa for example would cost him 4k a year if he drives within a month of passing his test. 2.5k if he waits a year before actually driving. 1.5k is he waits for 2yrs!
This is putting in made up details and having no 'no claims discount'.
How can he be a safer driver and not likely to have an accident by not driving for 2yrs!
    £100 - £10,000
  • I have just followed the tips on getting a better deal for my son's car insurance. He now has better cover (fully comp with me as named driver) with lower excesses and has saved a stonking £250. (I thought we were doing well when it looked like we'd saved £200 but then went through a cashback site too and got a cheaper quote plus cashback!) All sorted in less than an hour. :rotfl:Brilliant. Thank you so much.
