Can you claim the International ATM Charges

  • We live in North Cyprus and my husbands pension is paid into Clydesdale Bank every time we make a withdrawell from the ATM, of £300 we are charged £10.50. We have only recently heard about people claiming money back from banks so would we have a case to claim back all the ATM charges? When we moved here we enquired about getting the pension transferred over here but involved such high costs we didn't bother.

i dont think you can claim back the atm fee im afraid there is a list somewhere of what you can and cant claim for and im pretty sure atm fee is on the list of 'cants'.
  • My bank "Lloyds TSB" charge me £1 fee for any transaction made in a foreign currency, or any transactions I make whilst abroad.

I often buy things from abroad on the internet, and the overseas transaction fees are mounting up.

Can anyone tell me if these can be reclaimed?

I relocated to Spain last year. I have a debit card on my natwest current account, with whom I have 4 other accounts. I set up online banking but am not able to transfer money to my spanish account, or over the phone, only in the branch apparantley! and so have to use my debit card for purchases and withdrawals. the charges because of this are crazy!up to 50 pounds a month!for withdrawing 200 euros i get charged 5 pounds!!!!!!!i fill out a customer compliant form on the natwest site and they wrote back some nonsense saying that at this time they are not refunding charges and that i should have been aware of the % they charge on overseas use!they could of least advised me when i changed my address but no they kept quiet!i am so angry as i have little money as it is:mad:
has anyone else had this problem,or managed to resolve it.do you think i can reclaim these charges.

    thanks in advance!
  • Ok, with regards to the fact that you are in Spain. I would have suggested opening a bank account in Spain, which you have, and to make sure your contact details are up to date. You would have to send a written request to the bank and their process is to do what is called, a Call back. They telephone you confirm your identity from bank records and therefore authenticate that it is you that has asked for the money to be transferred. I would do that in tranches myself if I was in your position. NatWest charge for cash withdrawals abroad and purchases abroad. They are not reclaimable, I'm afraid.

Not sure if this is the right place to post but here goes, just come back from a 3 week tour of Ireland north and south, only to find I have incurred two charges for every time I used my debit card while away, about 20 times, once by the shop ERTF charge and then my bank Nat west put £1.25 charge on every transaction, now I don’t know why the shops charged me but I’m surprised the Nat west made charges as I rang them before I left to make sure I could use my debit card in Ireland, I was told it was ok to use, I would have thought they would have told me then, charges would be made, but they never, none of the transactions where for cash (ATM), so im surprised I’m being charged at all, Can they do this?

I have rang the Nat west only to be told to put it in writing

    Thanking you in anticipation

Yep. Happens wherever you pay for something in foreign currency.

They answered your question correctly - you could use your card in Ireland, but you didn't specifically ask about charges. As far as I know, only Nationwide doesn't charge for using a debit card abroad. ;)

Most banks charge for foreign use. Sorry but I think you were a bit naive here. Put it down to experience and get yourself a Nationwide card for next time.
    .....

  • I would agree totally with the above two posters. I rarely suggest other banks but Nationwide is the place to go because they do not charge for using the card overseas(they may offer a pretty poor exchange rate, but they gotta recoup what they are charged somehow), and they are, as far as I know, the only provider NOT to charge for using the card overseas(EIRE would be classed as overseas).
