I live in Germany with the Armed forces and Abbey charge me to take my money out of my account here, even though I LIVE here I am not on holiday.
The majority of banks dont charge the Armed forces based abroad to withdraw thier money over here but Abbey do. My problem is that they have branches over here that are open limited hours. I cant change my bank account as I wont then be able to deposit money into my account from here.
I complained to Abbey and after 8 weeks they finally said no they wouldnt give me back my charges as my account is a Visa Debit card and Visa charge them when I withdraw money over here so they pass on the charge to me.
If thats the case why do all the other banks manage to do it charge free??
Does anyone have any advice? I dont know if its worth fighting over now?
Thanks,
Tracy0 -
You can't reclaim withdrawal fees as they are fees for a service. Sorry.Reclaimed thanks to this site:

hi was wondering if anyone had any idea if charges for withdrawals overseas were overpriced and thence reclaimable as with other bank charges
i have an account with the royal bank of scotland and recently spent 10 months in cyprus . During that time i withdrew the best part of £20,000 at a maximum allowed single withdrawal of £300 a day . For each withdrawal i was charged around £12:50 . Being stony broke and in desperate need of some capital this amounts to a fair amount of pennies and £12:50 a withdrawal to me would seem also an exhorbitant amount to charge and may therefore be reclaimable too0 -
Beate has said they are unclaimable so i guess i will make the echo louder.
You cannot claim charges for overseas transactions. If you are that worried then open a Nationwide account to use overseas as they do not charge for cash withdrawals overseas.0 -

Hi
I have tried looking this up on the forum but no answers so hope you can help:
Living abroad and use debit card, £1.50 for each debit transaction/cash withdrawal can add up! Does anyone know whether i can reclaim these charges once i'm back in the UK through LLoyds and Halifax?
We phoned our banks and were told we could use a LLoyds ATM without charge if could find one, which we did but were still charged!
Anyone know whether these charges can be reclaimed or have more info on this?
Thanks0 -
No - it's a fee you pay for a service. What about getting an account with a local Bank instead?Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0

You won't be able to reclaim this. Might be a silly question but if you are living abroad why don't you open a bank account there? Btw, Nationwide doesn't charge for cash withdrawals abroad.Reclaimed thanks to this site:

Just wondering if this is fair.
I am living abroad and accept I have a 1.50 charge on top of a 2.75% commision when withdrawing money from my UK account.
Recently I discovered however that I can go into the local bank and withdraw over the counter. I was hoping this would mean there was no 1.50 service charge
The fact that the bank: -
1) Chooses the exchange rate
2) applies a 2.75% conversion fee
3) deducts a 1.50 service charge
makes me wonder how they can get away with the three money affected charges for one transaction.
the banks statement is: -
Charges for using your card abroad
If you use your card abroad, the amount of the transaction will be changed to pounds sterling on the date we take it out of your account. This may not be the same date that the transaction is carried out. We'll choose the exchange rate that applies and we'll include a conversion fee of 2.75% of the amount of the transaction. We will also deduct a service charge of £1.50 from your account immediately for each transaction.
Is this fair?:wall:
