And all of those possibilities on a tyre whose history is completely unknown to the person stupid enough to buy it second hand. And that is exactly why I'd rather pay a few quid more for a decent budget new tyre than a possibly dodgy used one.

    Good man.
Keep the comments coming in between the useful ones.

If anything, the opposite is probably true.
It's got an obvious patch of damage on it, there's not much doubt it's a dodgy used tyre.

Picture 2 appears to show something like a nail about third of way acroos and third of way down.

That's just a bit of dirt on the tyre. I did try to clean it up before I took the pictures, but I must have missed a bit.

It's got no nails, no glass or anything else stuck in it.
Apart from the one small area where it looks like it's been pecked by chickens, it's perfect.

So are you going to put it on your car then?

    Not sure I would.

    No.

It's also a Ceat Tornado tyre, one of the few tyres that has scored only one to two stars on tyre test. So even if it was good, I don't think I'd use it.

I suspect the car it was on originally crashed to be honest, (maybe as a result of the tyres)

It was on one of the rims I bought off ebay as a set of 5, for a tenner, to put my winter tyres on. They weren't sold as faulty, they were sold as a set of 5 wheels and tyres though, so a bit "buyer beware", but again only a tenner for the 5. (would have been more if anyone else had bid though)
One rim had a flat, very old tyre on, (advised in the listing) one rim had the other Ceat on, but was buckled, (not advised) the third rim had this tyre on, (again not advised of any damage)
It just seems an odd patch of damage.
It's possible it's the suggested skid marks, but there is no flattening to any tread. It's not sooty if you rub it, so I don't think it's burnt.
So I was curious as to what it looked like to any one else, or if they had seen similar.

You could use it to argue either way on part used tyres.
Either say they could all be damaged, so don't use them, or say if they are damaged, it's obvious, so this one wouldn't have made it back into the market, as it's got something up with it.

(The other two rims have got quite decent tyres on!)

Yeah the fact that this one has odd damage, and the other (presumably both front tyres) is buckled (so the other tyre is quite possibly toast inside) would mean I wouldn't use them either.

I was fortunate enough to locate four effectively brand-new steelies from a guy who had replaced them with alloys in the first 1000 miles after buying the car, and they have no tyres on at all.

But damaged, part-worn ditchfinders? No thanks :)

The only problem is, how bad was the accident? Are the other tyres safe to use? Question marks are there, and I think I'd throw those tyres away as well.
