tyre damage

  • Driven over broken glass or similar is my guess, not enough to puncture it, unless the inside of the carcass tells a different story but cut the tread indeed.

If the tyre has been bought used, check carefully for signs of a herringbone sort of pattern developing inside, that's usually a tell tale sign that it's been run low pressure.

I've loaded a few more photos, and a couple of shots of the good parts of the tyre.
  • Seeing those other pics inclined to agree with the suggestion of a short lock up under braking, too wise an area for even a broken bottle i imagine, doesn't look too bad to me so long as the inside of the tyre is sound.

I'll go with wheel spin and brake lock.

But it looks like a tyre where the main tread pattern is not to the same depth as the central groove, and as this is the whole of the pattern and not as single area or sipes as on that other thread, I would say that on this tyre your tread pattern may be below 1.6 before the twi's are flush, and therefore could be illegal if not already. You can see the tread joins the the main groove at a height *above* the twi. Only you will be able to see if this is because the tread shallows a little, 5mm either side of the main groove, thus creating a small band worn smooth when the tread is below 3mm as long as the rest of the tread is to the same depth as the main groove nothing to worry about but I thought you might want to know about my observation.

It looks llike a new tyre, apart from that bit. About 6mm of tread on it. Even on the damaged area.

From the other pics it seems there is a 5mm band of shallow tread either side of the main groove so that's ok.

All things being normal, wheel lock under braking. but it could be something else like a chemical reaction to the rubber.

That little triangle missing in the bottom RH corner, looks like heat damage to me.... It's where either the rubber was extremely hot OR the road was extremely hot, allowing a object to become melted into the tyre until it eventually wore down far enough to fall out.

My guess would be recent resurfacing work or possibly parking on hot tarmac during mid summer heat (but doubtful in this country for the last few years).
Could have been parked on a patch where there's been a chemical spillage.

Then at a stretch i'd say maybe frost/ice damage, where the tyre has hardened in cold weather and the water/ice has done what it does to the roads when pot holes are created.

And all of those possibilities on a tyre whose history is completely unknown to the person stupid enough to buy it second hand. And that is exactly why I'd rather pay a few quid more for a decent budget new tyre than a possibly dodgy used one.
